Chapter 5: The Letter They Were Never Meant to Read

Rain continued to fall over Manhattan before dawn, turning the city skyline into a blur of silver lights and shadow.

Inside St. Augustine Medical Center, Marcus Thorne hadn't slept for nearly twenty-four hours.

He stood beside the large window of Khloe's recovery suite, staring down at the empty streets below.

His reflection looked unfamiliar.

His tuxedo jacket was gone.

His white dress shirt was stained with Khloe's blood.

The sleeves were rolled to his elbows.

The billionaire celebrated on magazine covers had disappeared overnight.

All that remained was a husband desperate to protect his family.

Behind him, Khloe finally drifted into a deeper sleep.

The baby's heartbeat echoed steadily from the fetal monitor.

Each soft rhythm reminded Marcus of everything he still had to fight for.

A knock interrupted the silence.

Daniel Carter entered, carrying a sealed evidence envelope.

"I think we've found it."

Marcus turned.

"The letter?"

Daniel nodded.

"My team searched Adrian Cole's apartment under an emergency warrant."

He placed the evidence bag on the table.

"It was hidden inside a fireproof safe."

Marcus stared at the envelope.

Across the front, written in elegant blue ink, were five simple words.

To Marcus Thorne—Personal and Confidential.

The seal had already been broken.

Daniel looked apologetic.

"We had to examine it for fingerprints."

Marcus carefully unfolded the pages.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

Marcus,

If this letter has reached you, then someone has already tried to stop it.

There are truths about your father's estate that you were never allowed to know.

The official will you inherited five years ago was not the final version.

Your father changed it three days before his death.

Someone made sure that document disappeared.

The person responsible has remained close to your family ever since.

Trust no one simply because they have stood beside you for years.

Especially those who know your company from the inside.

Marcus stopped reading.

His pulse quickened.

"There are more pages."

He continued.

Victor Hale did not build his empire alone.

He built it using information stolen from your father decades ago.

When your father discovered the betrayal, he prepared evidence that would destroy Hale Capital forever.

That evidence was placed somewhere no one would think to search.

The location is known only by one member of your family.

Your wife.

Marcus frowned.

Khloe?

She had never even met his father.

The letter continued.

Your father trusted Eleanor.

She promised she would protect the truth until the right time.

If Eleanor has passed away, she would have passed that secret to someone she trusted completely.

Ask Khloe about the music box.

Marcus looked confused.

"The music box?"

Daniel frowned.

"Does that mean anything to you?"

Marcus slowly lowered the pages.

"My mother owned an antique music box."

"She treasured it."

"I haven't seen it since her funeral."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Where is it now?"

Marcus looked toward Khloe.

"I don't know."

At that exact moment...

Across Manhattan...

Victor Hale stood inside his penthouse office watching financial news.

One headline flashed across the television.

THORNE INDUSTRIES DELAYS MERGER AFTER FAMILY EMERGENCY

Victor smiled.

"The market always fears uncertainty."

An assistant entered.

"Sir."

"The company's stock has already fallen six percent."

Victor nodded.

"Good."

"And Adrian?"

The assistant hesitated.

"We've lost contact."

Victor's smile disappeared.

"What do you mean?"

"He abandoned his apartment."

Victor walked toward the window.

"Then he's frightened."

The assistant swallowed.

"Should we help him?"

Victor answered without turning around.

"No."

"He knows too much."

Meanwhile...

Adrian Cole drove north through heavy rain.

He hadn't stopped for hours.

Every police cruiser made his heart race.

Every passing car looked suspicious.

His phone buzzed again.

Another message from an unknown number.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE COUNTRY.

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

A second message arrived.

TURN AROUND.

Adrian looked into his rearview mirror.

A black SUV followed three car lengths behind.

It hadn't been there a moment earlier.

His breathing became shallow.

He accelerated.

The SUV accelerated too.

"Oh, God..."

He slammed the accelerator.

The rain blurred the highway.

The speedometer climbed past ninety miles per hour.

The SUV closed the distance.

Its headlights flashed once.

Then twice.

Adrian's phone rang.

Unknown number.

With trembling hands, he answered.

"What do you want?"

Victor Hale's calm voice filled the car.

"You've become a liability."

Adrian's blood ran cold.

"Victor..."

"You were supposed to remain invisible."

"They found the jammer."

"I know."

"They have the letter."

"I know."

"They're coming for us!"

"No."

Victor replied quietly.

"They're coming for you."

The call ended.

Adrian looked up.

The black SUV suddenly swerved.

Its front bumper slammed into the rear of his sedan.

Metal screamed.

The car spun across the rain-soaked highway.

Glass exploded.

The sedan rolled twice before crashing violently into the median barrier.

Silence.

Smoke rose from the twisted wreckage.

Back at the hospital...

Marcus received the call twenty minutes later.

Daniel answered first.

"What happened?"

The detective on the other end spoke quickly.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"When?"

He glanced toward Marcus.

"I understand."

He ended the call.

Marcus already knew.

"Adrian?"

Daniel nodded.

"There was an accident."

Marcus studied his face.

"He's dead."

Daniel remained silent for several seconds.

Finally...

"No."

Marcus looked relieved.

"He's alive."

"But barely."

"He was airlifted to Mercy General."

Marcus exhaled.

"We need to talk to him."

Daniel shook his head.

"The doctors aren't sure he'll survive the night."

Inside Khloe's room...

She slowly opened her eyes again.

Marcus immediately sat beside her.

"Hey."

She smiled weakly.

"You haven't slept."

He laughed quietly.

"You noticed."

"I always notice."

For a moment, everything else faded away.

The conspiracy.

The investigation.

The headlines.

Only the two of them remained.

Marcus gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"I need to ask you something."

"What?"

"Did my mother ever give you a music box?"

Khloe stared at him.

Her eyes widened.

"You found the letter..."

Marcus froze.

"You knew?"

Khloe nodded slowly.

"Your mother gave it to me six months before she died."

Marcus felt the room spin.

"What?"

"She made me promise never to open it..."

"...unless something happened to our family."

Marcus whispered,

"Where is it?"

Khloe closed her eyes.

"It's hidden..."

Before she could finish—

Every light in the hospital room suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the suite.

Emergency alarms echoed through the hallway.

Then came the unmistakable sound of footsteps.

Not nurses.

May you like

Not doctors.

Someone was running toward Khloe's room.
