Chapter 10: The Child From 1991

The photograph lay motionless on the hospital table.

No one spoke.

Marcus picked it up again, studying every detail.

The infant looked only a few hours old, wrapped in a pale blue blanket embroidered with the initials S.G.H.

Daniel leaned closer.

"Those initials..."

Marcus looked at him.

"Saint Gabriel Hospital."

Daniel nodded.

"It closed nearly thirty years ago."

Marcus turned the photograph over.

On the back was another handwritten message.

November 14, 1991.

Nothing else.

Khloe watched Marcus's expression change.

"What is it?"

He answered slowly.

"I was born in 1992."

The room fell silent.

Daniel understood first.

"The baby in the photograph..."

"...was born before you."

Marcus nodded.

"If the note is telling the truth..."

"...someone else was considered the Thorne heir."

FBI Field Office

Special Agent Rebecca Lawson returned carrying another file.

"I think I found something."

She spread several aging documents across the conference table.

"Saint Gabriel Hospital burned down in 1998."

Marcus frowned.

"Accident?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"Officially."

She slid forward an insurance report.

"The fire started in the records archive."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"Convenient."

Rebecca nodded.

"Almost every birth record from the early 1990s was destroyed."

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

"So whoever sent this knew those records were gone."

"Apparently."

Rebecca placed one final document on the table.

A faded newspaper clipping.

Its headline read:

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN'S WIFE GIVES BIRTH TO HEALTHY SON

The accompanying photograph showed Marcus's parents leaving the hospital.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

He had seen it dozens of times growing up.

But now another figure caught his attention.

Standing in the background—

Victor Hale.

Watching.

Not smiling.

Hale Estate

Victor sat alone in his study.

The DNA report remained open before him.

Vivian entered quietly.

"You haven't slept."

Victor ignored the observation.

Instead, he looked up.

"Have you ever wondered why I hated Richard Thorne?"

Vivian frowned.

"You said he stole your future."

Victor smiled bitterly.

"That's what I wanted everyone to believe."

She waited.

"The truth is far uglier."

Victor walked toward the fireplace.

"In 1991..."

"...everything changed."

St. Augustine Medical Center

Late that night, Khloe awoke to voices outside her room.

The door was slightly open.

She recognized Sarah Bennett's voice.

"No one enters without my approval."

Another voice answered.

"I'm from Pediatrics."

"I need Mrs. Thorne's signature."

Sarah didn't move.

"Not at two in the morning."

Silence.

Then footsteps retreated down the hallway.

Khloe slowly reached for the call button.

Sarah entered immediately.

"Did we wake you?"

Khloe shook her head.

"The man outside..."

Sarah frowned.

"What about him?"

"I've never seen him before."

Sarah's expression hardened.

"There isn't a male pediatrician working this floor tonight."

She immediately reached for her radio.

"Lock down the elevators."

"Possible impersonation."

An Unexpected Visitor

The following morning, Marcus returned from the FBI office carrying fresh coffee for Khloe.

As he entered the room, he found someone already sitting beside her bed.

An elderly priest.

He wore a simple black cassock and held a weathered leather Bible.

Marcus stopped.

"I'm sorry..."

The priest stood.

"You must be Marcus."

"I am."

"My name is Father Michael Donovan."

Marcus frowned.

"I don't believe we've met."

"No."

"But your mother asked me to find you."

Marcus froze.

"My mother?"

Father Michael nodded.

"Years ago."

"Long before she died."

He reached into his coat and removed a sealed envelope.

"Eleanor made me promise that if anyone ever mentioned Saint Gabriel Hospital..."

"...I was to give this to her son."

Marcus accepted the envelope with trembling hands.

The seal was untouched.

Across the front, in Eleanor's familiar handwriting, were four words.

For Marcus. When Ready.

Marcus could barely breathe.

His mother's handwriting.

After all these years.

Khloe reached for his hand.

"Open it."

He carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My Dearest Marcus,

If you're reading this, then the past has finally caught up with you.

There are truths I prayed would remain buried forever.

Not because I wished to deceive you...

...but because I wished to protect you.

Marcus swallowed hard.

He continued reading.

The child born in November 1991 was never your enemy.

He was innocent.

Everything that happened afterward was the result of choices made by powerful men who believed wealth mattered more than family.

Marcus looked up.

His pulse pounded.

Father Michael quietly said,

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Richard loved you with all his heart.

Never doubt that.

He chose you every single day.

But he also carried a burden that eventually destroyed him.

The answers you seek are hidden where he made his final promise.

Below the final sentence was another location.

Not New York.

Not Boston.

A remote lakeside cabin in northern Maine.

Marcus whispered,

"My father used to take me fishing there."

Father Michael nodded slowly.

"He wanted you to remember it."

Elsewhere...

Vivian Hale received a phone call.

She listened without speaking.

Finally, she smiled.

"They found Eleanor's letter."

Victor looked up.

"So."

"It's time."

Vivian ended the call.

"Our people are already heading to Maine."

Victor stared into the fire.

"They'll arrive before Marcus if they leave now."

Vivian smiled confidently.

"Should I tell them to retrieve the documents?"

Victor slowly shook his head.

"No."

She looked surprised.

"Then what?"

Victor's voice became quiet.

"Tell them..."

"...to make sure Marcus never leaves that cabin."

The room fell silent.

Even Vivian looked unsettled.

"You mean..."

May you like

Victor met her eyes.

"This ends in Maine."
