Chapter 2: Every Second Was Recorded

The silence that followed Daniel Carter's words seemed heavier than the walls themselves.

No one moved.

Not Marcus.

Not Elaine Parker.

Not the emergency physicians rushing into the suite with stretchers and trauma kits.

Even Isabella Rossi stood frozen, her carefully rehearsed tears lingering on her cheeks as though she had forgotten whether she was supposed to keep crying.

Daniel held the encrypted hard drive in one hand.

His expression never changed.

"I've already ordered Security Operations to secure every surveillance file from this floor."

His eyes settled on Isabella.

"No footage will be deleted."

A flicker of panic crossed her face.

It lasted less than a second.

But Marcus saw it.

And once he saw it...

He couldn't unsee it.

"Move!"

A trauma surgeon knelt beside Khloe.

"We're losing time."

Another doctor carefully examined her abdomen while two nurses started IV lines.

Khloe winced.

Every touch sent another wave of pain through her body.

"Mrs. Thorne?"

The physician leaned closer.

"Can you hear me?"

She nodded weakly.

"My... baby..."

"We're doing everything we can."

"Heartbeat?"

A nurse pressed the Doppler monitor against Khloe's stomach.

The room became painfully quiet.

Static.

More static.

Then—

A rapid heartbeat echoed through the suite.

Everyone exhaled.

Including Marcus.

For a moment, his knees nearly gave out.

"It's there," the doctor said.

"But the rhythm is unstable."

"We're taking her to surgery immediately."

Marcus grabbed Khloe's hand.

"I'm coming."

"I'm sorry," the surgeon replied gently.

"You can't."

Khloe squeezed Marcus's fingers with surprising strength.

Her lips trembled.

"Protect..."

He leaned closer.

"What?"

"Protect... our baby..."

"You don't have to worry about anything."

"I'll be right outside."

She tried to smile.

Then another contraction hit.

The scream that escaped her cut through every person standing in the room.

The medical team rushed her toward the hallway.

Marcus followed until the operating room doors closed between them.

The bright red light above the entrance illuminated.

SURGERY IN PROGRESS

He stared at it.

Unable to breathe.

Behind him...

Someone quietly cleared their throat.

Isabella.

She stepped forward carefully, clutching her own arm as if she were the victim.

"Marcus..."

He didn't answer.

"I know what this looks like."

Still nothing.

"I only defended myself."

His shoulders remained perfectly still.

She reached toward him.

The instant her fingertips touched his sleeve—

Marcus turned.

The look in his eyes made her pull her hand back immediately.

There was no love there.

No affection.

No confusion.

Only something cold.

Something calculating.

"You should stop talking."

She blinked.

"What?"

"Every lie you tell now..."

His voice was almost a whisper.

"...becomes another crime if that footage says otherwise."

Her mouth opened.

Closed.

Opened again.

"You don't actually believe—"

"I believe my wife."

For the first time in years...

Isabella had no response.

Daniel Carter approached carrying a tablet computer.

"The recordings are downloading."

Marcus looked at him.

"How long?"

"Ten minutes."

"I want to see everything."

"You will."

Daniel hesitated.

"But there's something else."

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

"The cameras don't record audio."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"So we'll see what happened."

"Yes."

"But not what was said."

Marcus looked toward the operating room.

It didn't matter.

He already knew one thing.

Khloe had never lied to him.

Not once.

Twenty minutes earlier...

Downstairs...

The charity gala had still been in full swing.

Hundreds of guests remained inside the grand ballroom.

Champagne flowed freely.

A live orchestra continued playing.

Almost no one knew that, just two floors above them...

The future of the Thorne family hung by a thread.

Then whispers began spreading.

"Something happened upstairs."

"I heard Mrs. Thorne collapsed."

"No..."

"Someone said she was attacked."

Phones appeared.

Journalists started texting sources.

Within minutes...

Rumors exploded across social media.

BREAKING: Billionaire Marcus Thorne's pregnant wife rushed into emergency surgery.

No details.

Only speculation.

Back upstairs...

Elaine Parker's phone vibrated continuously.

She ignored every call.

Instead, she walked toward Daniel.

"I've already instructed staff not to discuss anything."

Daniel nodded.

"Good."

"But the media already knows."

"I expected that."

He looked toward the surveillance room.

"What matters now isn't the headlines."

"It's evidence."

Inside Security Operations...

Six enormous monitors displayed every hallway, elevator, entrance, and VIP suite.

Technicians worked furiously.

One officer inserted the encrypted drive into a secure workstation.

The timestamp appeared.

7:42 PM

Camera 14.

VIP Suite A.

The footage began.

Daniel folded his arms.

Marcus stood beside him.

Neither man spoke.

Onscreen...

Khloe entered first.

She looked exhausted.

She removed her heels.

Massaged her swollen feet.

She poured herself a glass of water.

Nothing unusual.

Thirty seconds later...

The suite door opened again.

Isabella entered.

Without knocking.

Marcus frowned.

"I never invited her."

Daniel said nothing.

The footage continued.

The women spoke.

No audio.

Only body language.

Khloe remained calm.

Isabella became increasingly animated.

Pointing.

Laughing.

Stepping closer.

Then—

A shove.

Khloe stumbled backward.

Marcus clenched his fists.

The marble table caught her.

She nearly fell.

Daniel paused the video.

"Do you want to continue?"

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"Play it."

The recording resumed.

Khloe tried to leave.

Isabella blocked the doorway.

Another confrontation.

Another shove.

Harder.

Khloe crashed into the table.

The champagne glass shattered.

Marcus felt sick.

But the worst was still coming.

The timestamp read:

7:46:18 PM

Isabella looked down at Khloe.

She took one slow step forward.

Raised her right foot.

Then drove the stiletto heel directly into Khloe's side.

The image was unmistakable.

There was no struggle.

No accident.

No self-defense.

Only deliberate violence.

Marcus closed his eyes.

For one long moment...

No one in the room breathed.

Daniel stopped the recording.

"We have everything."

Marcus stared at the frozen frame on the monitor.

Khloe curled on the floor.

Protecting their unborn child.

Isabella standing above her.

Cold.

Expressionless.

The truth fit on a single screen.

The security room door suddenly opened.

A young technician hurried inside.

"Chief Carter."

"What is it?"

"We've recovered another camera."

Daniel looked up.

"There was a maintenance camera inside the hallway mirror."

Marcus frowned.

"I didn't know that existed."

"Almost no one does."

The technician swallowed.

"It captured someone entering the suite five minutes before Isabella."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Who?"

The technician turned the monitor toward them.

Marcus felt his pulse stop.

Walking calmly down the hallway...

Looking over his shoulder before slipping something beneath the decorative cabinet inside the VIP suite...

Was someone Marcus trusted more than almost anyone.

His own executive assistant.

Adrian Cole.

May you like

Marcus whispered only one sentence.

"What were you doing in my wife's room?"
