Chapter 8: The Music Box

Marcus stared out the SUV window as the quiet streets of Maple Hollow disappeared behind them.
The words echoed relentlessly in his mind.
You can protect the wife... but no one can protect the heir.
It wasn't simply a threat.
It meant someone knew the baby had survived.
Someone inside the hospital had leaked confidential medical information.
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
"We have a mole."
Daniel didn't argue.
"I've been thinking the same thing."
"The information about Khloe's condition wasn't public."
"No."
"The baby's condition wasn't public either."
Marcus clenched his jaw.
"Find everyone who had access to her medical records."
Daniel nodded.
"I've already requested the access logs."
St. Augustine Medical Center – New York
Captain Sarah Bennett watched as officers escorted the elderly woman into an interrogation room.
She had offered no resistance.
No fear.
No explanation.
Only that unsettling smile.
Sarah placed the bouquet of lilies on the table.
Crime Scene technicians carefully examined every flower.
One technician called out.
"Captain."
Sarah walked over.
Inside the bouquet stem was a tiny capsule.
The technician carefully removed it with tweezers.
"Cyanide."
Sarah's expression hardened.
"If she'd reached Mrs. Thorne..."
The technician nodded.
"It would've looked like sudden cardiac arrest."
Sarah quietly closed the evidence box.
"This wasn't an amateur."
On the Road to Boston
Rain began falling again as Marcus's convoy crossed into Massachusetts.
The address from Margaret's note led to Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, where Eleanor Thorne had been buried five years earlier.
Marcus had visited only once since the funeral.
He had never been able to bring himself back.
Daniel glanced at him.
"When was the last time you were here?"
"My mother's funeral."
"You never came back?"
Marcus shook his head.
"I couldn't."
Daniel understood.
Some grief never disappeared.
It simply learned to live quietly.
Victor Hale's Penthouse
Victor stood before an enormous chessboard.
He wasn't playing anyone.
He often played against himself when thinking.
Across from him sat a young woman in her early thirties.
Elegant.
Composed.
Dangerously intelligent.
Her name was Vivian Hale.
Victor's only daughter.
She calmly moved a black queen across the board.
"They found the bookstore."
Victor nodded.
"As expected."
"They're going to Boston."
"I know."
Vivian smiled faintly.
"Should we stop them?"
Victor studied the board.
"No."
"Let them find it."
She looked surprised.
"The music box?"
Victor shook his head.
"The music box was never the prize."
Vivian leaned forward.
"Then what is?"
Victor moved a white king into check.
"Hope."
Evergreen Memorial Cemetery
The cemetery was nearly empty.
A light mist hovered above the rows of polished headstones.
Marcus slowly walked toward his mother's grave.
Fresh white lilies rested against the granite.
Someone had been there recently.
He knelt.
ELEANOR GRACE THORNE
Beloved Wife.
Beloved Mother.
Forever Our Light.
Marcus gently brushed leaves away from the inscription.
"I should've visited more."
His voice was barely audible.
Daniel stood a respectful distance away.
Then Marcus noticed something strange.
The flowers weren't fresh.
Yet one small white rose looked perfect.
Almost artificial.
He reached toward it.
The flower didn't move.
It was attached to something beneath the soil.
Daniel immediately stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Marcus carefully pulled.
The rose lifted free.
Attached to its stem was a tiny brass key.
Marcus frowned.
"A key?"
Daniel took out gloves.
"No markings."
Marcus turned toward his mother's headstone.
Then he saw it.
A tiny keyhole hidden beneath the engraved cross.
"So that's where it goes."
He inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
A hidden compartment slowly opened inside the base of the monument.
Both men stared.
Inside rested...
The music box.
Untouched.
Marcus blinked.
"But..."
"Margaret said they took it."
Daniel looked closer.
"No."
"They took a fake."
Marcus carefully lifted the antique box from the compartment.
It was smaller than he expected.
Rosewood.
Hand-carved roses.
A tiny silver latch.
On the bottom, burned into the wood, were Eleanor's initials.
E.G.T.
Marcus hesitated.
"Should I open it?"
Daniel nodded.
"I think your mother wanted you to."
Marcus slowly released the latch.
The lid opened.
A delicate melody filled the quiet cemetery.
The same lullaby Eleanor had played for him as a child.
Marcus smiled sadly.
Then his smile disappeared.
Inside the box wasn't jewelry.
Or letters.
There was only one object.
A brass key.
Much larger than the first one.
And beneath it...
A folded photograph.
Marcus unfolded it carefully.
The picture showed four people standing together in front of an unfinished office building thirty-five years earlier.
Marcus immediately recognized his father.
Beside him stood Victor Hale.
A third man Marcus had never seen.
And...
The fourth person made Marcus's heart stop.
Daniel looked over his shoulder.
"What?"
Marcus whispered,
"That's impossible..."
Daniel stared at the photograph.
The fourth person looked unmistakably familiar.
It wasn't Marcus.
It wasn't Victor.
It was...
Judge Harrison Bennett.
The man currently assigned to every legal matter involving Thorne Industries.
More importantly...
Captain Sarah Bennett's father.
New York
At almost the exact same moment...
Captain Sarah Bennett reviewed hospital security footage.
One detail suddenly caught her attention.
The elderly woman carrying the poisoned flowers had entered through the employee entrance.
Not the visitor entrance.
She rewound the recording.
Paused it.
A hospital employee had scanned an ID badge to let her inside.
Sarah zoomed in.
The badge belonged to...
Dr. Leonard Pierce.
Chief of Obstetrics.
The very doctor overseeing Khloe's pregnancy.
Sarah's face turned pale.
"No..."
She immediately reached for her phone.
Boston
Marcus's phone rang.
Sarah.
He answered instantly.
"Sarah?"
Her breathing was uneven.
"Marcus..."
"What happened?"
"I think we've identified the mole."
Marcus's voice dropped.
"Who?"
Sarah swallowed.
"Dr. Pierce."
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
The doctor who had treated Khloe since the beginning of her pregnancy.
The man they had trusted completely.
Daniel's expression darkened.
"Can you arrest him?"
Sarah hesitated.
"That's the problem."
"What?"
"We can't."
Marcus felt a chill.
"He disappeared thirty minutes ago."
Silence.
Then Daniel quietly spoke.
"If Pierce is running..."
Marcus finished the thought.
"...then someone warned him."
At that very moment, hundreds of miles away, a black sedan pulled into a private airfield.
Dr. Leonard Pierce stepped out carrying a silver briefcase.
Waiting beside a helicopter...
was Vivian Hale.
She smiled.
"You were almost caught."
Pierce handed her the briefcase.
"I have everything."
Vivian looked inside.
Medical files.
DNA reports.
Ultrasound images.
Every confidential record connected to Khloe's pregnancy.
Vivian closed the case.
"Excellent."
Pierce frowned.
"Now tell me."
"Why is Marcus's unborn son so important?"
Vivian smiled without answering.
Instead, she looked toward the rising helicopter.
