Chapter 14: Live Before the Nation

The television volume seemed impossibly loud inside the quiet cabin.
Every network carried the same live broadcast.
The banner beneath the podium read:
SENATOR WILLIAM ASHCROFT TO MAKE MAJOR NATIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT
Marcus stared at the screen.
Victor Hale stood beside him, his injured shoulder wrapped in fresh bandages.
For decades they had blamed one another.
Now they stood shoulder to shoulder, watching the man who had manipulated both families prepare to address the nation.
Daniel Carter broke the silence.
"We don't have enough."
Marcus looked at him.
"The recordings..."
"The documents..."
"They prove Samuel Whitmore existed."
Daniel nodded.
"But proving Senator Ashcroft is Samuel Whitmore..."
"...requires evidence that will stand up in federal court."
Rebecca Lawson agreed.
"If we accuse him publicly without airtight proof, he'll destroy us."
Marcus clenched his fists.
"So what are we missing?"
Victor answered quietly.
"The original hospital ledger."
Everyone looked at him.
"The one document Samuel could never destroy."
Washington, D.C.
Behind the scenes of the televised event, Senator William Ashcroft adjusted his tie.
An aide smiled.
"Five minutes, Senator."
Ashcroft nodded.
His smile was warm.
Confident.
Exactly the face Americans trusted.
When the aide left, Ashcroft looked at his reflection.
"So close."
His phone vibrated.
He answered.
"Yes?"
A nervous voice replied.
"They found Richard's files."
Ashcroft remained calm.
"I expected they would."
"What should we do?"
He smiled.
"They're still missing the only document that matters."
He ended the call.
The Ledger
Back at the cabin, Victor slowly walked toward the fireplace.
"There was one thing Richard and I agreed on."
Marcus watched him carefully.
"If Samuel ever came back..."
"...the ledger would expose him."
Marcus frowned.
"Where is it?"
Victor smiled sadly.
"If Richard kept his promise..."
"...it isn't here."
Daniel crossed his arms.
"Then where?"
Victor looked at Marcus.
"With the only person Samuel would never suspect."
Marcus's eyes widened.
"Mother."
Victor nodded.
"Eleanor."
Marcus thought back to everything Eleanor had left behind.
The music box.
The hidden key.
The letters.
She had always been one step ahead.
Then a memory struck him.
He looked toward Daniel.
"My mother's lawyer."
Daniel frowned.
"The one who handled her estate?"
Marcus nodded.
"He told me Eleanor left one sealed package."
"I never collected it."
Rebecca immediately stood.
"Where?"
"New York."
St. Augustine Medical Center
Khloe sat upright for the first time since the attack.
Dr. Evelyn Brooks smiled.
"Your latest scan looks excellent."
Khloe looked relieved.
"And the baby?"
"Strong."
"Very strong."
For the first time in days, genuine happiness reached Khloe's eyes.
Then Sarah Bennett entered.
"Marcus is flying back."
Khloe smiled.
"Good."
Sarah hesitated.
"He says everything ends tonight."
The Safety Deposit Box
Late that evening, Marcus, Daniel, Rebecca, and Victor arrived at the Manhattan law office that had represented Eleanor Thorne for decades.
An elderly attorney greeted Marcus warmly.
"I've been waiting a very long time for this."
Marcus looked surprised.
"You knew?"
The attorney nodded.
"Your mother instructed me never to release this package unless you came here carrying her music box."
Marcus slowly placed the antique music box on the desk.
The attorney smiled.
"Then today is the day."
He opened a secure vault.
Inside rested a small safety deposit box.
Marcus unlocked it using the brass key from the music box.
Inside was one thick leather ledger.
And another letter from Eleanor.
Marcus opened the letter first.
My beloved son,
If you have reached this moment, then you already know that truth survives longer than lies.
Blood can begin a family.
Love is what keeps one together.
Whatever you discover inside this ledger...
Never allow it to change the way you see Richard.
He chose to become your father every single day.
That choice made him a greater man than most who share blood.
Marcus quietly wiped away a tear.
Victor looked away respectfully.
The Evidence
Rebecca carefully opened the ledger.
Every page contained handwritten entries from Saint Gabriel Hospital.
Birth records.
Staff signatures.
Emergency logs.
Financial transactions.
Then...
Page 147.
Rebecca froze.
"There."
Marcus leaned closer.
The page contained the original delivery records from November 14, 1991.
At the bottom was one signature.
Samuel Whitmore
Beside it—
A fingerprint preserved beneath the hospital seal.
Rebecca looked up.
"This is enough."
Daniel nodded.
"Fingerprints don't lie."
Victor quietly exhaled.
"After thirty-five years..."
"...we finally have him."
Washington
At exactly the same moment...
Senator Ashcroft prepared to leave the television studio.
A Secret Service agent approached.
"Sir."
Ashcroft smiled.
"Yes?"
"We've received an urgent request from the FBI."
His smile faded only slightly.
"What kind of request?"
The agent's expression remained professional.
"They'd like you to remain available for questioning."
Ashcroft laughed.
"I'm a United States Senator."
The agent didn't smile.
"Yes, sir."
"And they have a federal warrant."
For the first time in decades...
Fear crossed Samuel Whitmore's face.
Real fear.
New York
Marcus's phone rang.
Rebecca answered first.
After listening for nearly a minute, she slowly smiled.
"He didn't get far."
Marcus looked up.
"What happened?"
"The FBI intercepted his motorcade before it reached the airport."
Daniel nodded.
"And?"
Rebecca's smile widened.
"Samuel Whitmore..."
"...also known as Senator William Ashcroft..."
"...is officially under arrest."
Silence filled the room.
Marcus slowly closed his eyes.
The nightmare that had begun with a violent attack in a hospital suite was finally coming to an end.
But one question still remained unanswered.
Marcus looked toward Victor.
"There is one thing I still need to know."
Victor nodded.
"I know."
Marcus spoke softly.
"Who am I?"
Victor looked at him with tears in his eyes.
May you like
"I was hoping..."
"...we'd answer that together."
