Chapter 6: The Blackout

For one terrifying second, the entire hospital disappeared into darkness.
The soft hum of medical equipment died.
The lights above Khloe's bed blinked once...
...then went black.
A chorus of emergency alarms erupted throughout St. Augustine Medical Center as backup generators struggled to engage.
Marcus was already moving.
"Khloe!"
"I'm here," she whispered, her voice trembling.
He reached for the bed, finding her hand in the darkness just as the fetal monitor switched to battery power. A rapid beeping filled the room.
Outside, hurried footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Not the steady pace of nurses.
Not the measured stride of security officers.
These footsteps were fast.
Purposeful.
Running.
Daniel Carter's voice rang out from somewhere beyond the door.
"Lock down the maternity floor!"
Hospital security surged into motion.
Heavy fire doors began sliding shut at both ends of the corridor.
Red emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the hallway in an eerie crimson glow.
Marcus positioned himself between Khloe's bed and the door.
His pulse pounded in his ears.
Someone had chosen this exact moment to strike.
The suite door handle moved.
Slowly.
Almost cautiously.
Marcus grabbed the nearest object he could find—a solid brass lamp from the bedside table.
The handle turned another inch.
Then stopped.
A shadow appeared beneath the gap at the bottom of the door.
Marcus tightened his grip.
The lock clicked.
The door swung inward.
A security officer burst inside.
"Mr. Thorne!"
Marcus lowered the lamp.
"What happened?"
"The hospital lost external power."
Daniel entered immediately behind him.
"But someone also disabled two backup circuits."
Marcus frowned.
"That's not an accident."
"No."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"It was sabotage."
Across the hallway, technicians worked frantically to restore surveillance feeds.
Half the cameras had gone offline during the blackout.
The remaining cameras showed only fragments of movement.
One monitor displayed a hooded figure entering a service stairwell.
Another showed an empty corridor.
A third camera briefly captured someone wearing hospital scrubs pushing a supply cart toward the maternity wing.
Then the image froze.
Daniel studied the screen.
"Zoom in."
The technician enlarged the frozen frame.
The person wore a surgical mask.
A cap.
Loose-fitting scrubs.
Nothing unusual.
Until Daniel noticed the shoes.
Black Italian leather dress shoes.
Not hospital footwear.
"Freeze that."
The technician nodded.
Daniel pointed.
"Medical staff don't wear shoes like those."
Marcus looked closer.
Neither did corporate executives.
Unless...
Someone wanted to look like medical staff.
Meanwhile...
Twenty miles away...
Adrian Cole drifted in and out of consciousness inside the intensive care unit at Mercy General Hospital.
Machines breathed for him.
His ribs were shattered.
His left arm was broken.
A nurse adjusted his IV.
As she stepped into the hallway, another doctor approached.
Or at least...
He appeared to be a doctor.
White coat.
Face mask.
Hospital identification badge.
No one questioned him.
He entered Adrian's room quietly.
Closed the door.
Removed a syringe from his pocket.
Adrian's eyes fluttered open.
He recognized the man immediately.
Fear flooded his face.
He tried to speak.
The oxygen tube muffled every sound.
The visitor leaned closer.
"I'm sorry."
His voice was calm.
"You were never supposed to survive the crash."
Adrian shook his head desperately.
The syringe moved toward the IV line.
Just before the needle touched the tubing—
The room door flew open.
"Step away from the patient!"
Two state detectives rushed inside with weapons drawn.
The fake doctor froze.
Then bolted toward the window.
He smashed through the emergency exit door instead.
An alarm screamed through the ICU.
The detectives chased him into the stairwell.
By the time they reached the parking garage...
He was gone.
Only a discarded white coat remained behind.
Back at St. Augustine...
Power finally returned.
The lights flickered back to life.
Khloe blinked against the brightness.
Marcus immediately looked at the fetal monitor.
The baby's heartbeat remained steady.
He let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Daniel Carter."
His expression changed almost instantly.
"When?"
Marcus watched him closely.
Daniel ended the call.
"They tried to kill Adrian."
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"So he really does know something."
Daniel nodded.
"And now whoever hired him is cleaning up loose ends."
An hour later...
A forensic team completed their examination of the maternity floor.
One investigator approached Daniel carrying a clear evidence bag.
"We found this inside the electrical room."
Daniel looked inside.
A disposable pair of surgical gloves.
A hospital access card.
And a gold cufflink engraved with a single letter.
H.
Marcus frowned.
"Hale."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Or someone wants us to think it's Hale."
Marcus picked up the evidence bag.
"This isn't Victor's style."
Daniel looked at him.
"You know him that well?"
Marcus's expression turned distant.
"We grew up together."
Daniel blinked.
"You never told me that."
"There wasn't a reason."
Marcus stared at the engraved cufflink.
"Our fathers built their companies side by side."
"Until something destroyed their friendship."
Daniel folded his arms.
"The letter mentioned your father discovering a betrayal."
Marcus nodded.
"I always thought it was about money."
"But maybe..."
He looked toward Khloe's room.
"...it was something much bigger."
Later that afternoon...
Khloe rested while Marcus sat beside her reading the letter again.
One sentence refused to leave his mind.
Ask Khloe about the music box.
He reached for her hand.
"You were trying to tell me something before the blackout."
She nodded weakly.
"The music box."
"Where is it?"
Khloe hesitated.
"I didn't hide it."
Marcus frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"I gave it to someone."
His heart skipped.
"Who?"
"My mother."
Marcus looked confused.
"I thought she passed away years ago."
Khloe smiled faintly.
"My adoptive mother."
"She owns a little bookstore in Vermont."
Marcus remembered immediately.
The tiny bookstore.
The quiet woman who had insisted on paying for dinner the first time they'd met.
He had always admired her dignity.
"Why did you give it to her?"
Khloe closed her eyes.
"Because Eleanor told me..."
"...that if anyone ever came looking for the music box..."
"...it meant the Thorne family was no longer safe."
Silence settled over the room.
Marcus understood.
Someone else had known about the music box.
Someone had been searching for it all along.
And if that someone realized it wasn't in New York...
Vermont would be their next destination.
Marcus stood.
"I'm going to Vermont."
Daniel looked up.
"I'll come with you."
Marcus nodded.
"No."
Daniel frowned.
"Why not?"
"Because if we're both gone..."
Marcus glanced toward Khloe.
"...there'll be no one left here to protect my wife."
At that exact moment, Marcus's phone vibrated.
A text message from an unknown number.
There was only one line.
You're already too late.
Marcus's blood ran cold.
He immediately called Khloe's adoptive mother.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
No answer.
Then the call disconnected.
Marcus looked at Daniel.
"We leave now."
Miles away, in a quiet Vermont bookstore, the front door slowly creaked open.
An elderly woman looked up from behind the counter.
"Can I help you?"
A well-dressed stranger smiled politely.
"Yes."
May you like
He placed an old photograph of Eleanor Thorne on the counter.
"I'm looking for a music box."
