Chapter 7 – The Child Who Refused to Give Up

The first sound Marcus heard was not a voice.

It was a heartbeat.

A weak, uneven rhythm echoed through the speakers connected to the neonatal monitor.

Dr. Rebecca Sloan stepped into the waiting area, exhaustion etched across her face.

Marcus was on his feet before she spoke.

"Khloe?"

Rebecca offered a small smile.

"She's alive."

Marcus closed his eyes in relief.

"And the baby?"

Rebecca took a slow breath.

"We had to perform an emergency cesarean section."

"The baby boy arrived almost ten weeks early."

Marcus felt his knees weaken.

"He made it through delivery."

"But he's extremely premature."

"He'll remain in the NICU."

David Lawson quietly whispered, "Thank God."

Rebecca's expression softened.

"Your wife lost a significant amount of blood."

"She's stable, but the next twenty-four hours are critical."

Marcus nodded.

"I want to see them."

"You can."

"But only for a few minutes."

The neonatal intensive care unit was unlike any boardroom Marcus had ever entered.

Machines hummed softly.

Tiny incubators lined the room.

Each held a fragile life fighting its own battle.

A nurse stopped beside one incubator.

"This is your son."

Marcus stared through the clear walls.

The baby looked impossibly small.

His fingers curled around nothing.

A tiny oxygen mask covered most of his face.

Marcus placed one finger through the opening.

The baby's hand instinctively wrapped around it.

The grip was weak.

Yet somehow stronger than anything Marcus had ever experienced.

Tears blurred his vision.

"You've already survived more than most people ever will."

"You just keep fighting."

"We'll fight with you."

Across the hallway, Khloe slowly opened her eyes.

Her lips barely moved.

"The baby..."

Marcus leaned close.

"He's alive."

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"Boy or girl?"

"A son."

Khloe smiled through the pain.

"I knew it."

Marcus kissed her forehead.

"You saved him."

She shook her head weakly.

"We saved each other."

Outside the room, David watched silently.

For one brief moment, hope returned to the hospital.

None of them knew that downstairs, someone was already planning how to destroy that hope before sunrise.
