Chapter 11 – The Witness No One Expected

Richard Hawthorne believed he had erased every loose end.

He was wrong.

Across town, sixty-eight-year-old Martha Ellis watched the evening news from her modest apartment.

When Richard's face appeared beside Isabella's, she nearly dropped her teacup.

"No..."

She whispered.

"It can't be."

For nearly thirty years Martha had worked as secretary to William Lawson.

She had retired quietly after William's sudden death.

She never spoke publicly about those years.

Until now.

The next morning she walked into Detective Donovan's office carrying a faded storage box.

"I think you're looking for this."

Claire opened it carefully.

Inside were dozens of files.

Meeting minutes.

Letters.

Financial statements.

At the bottom rested a small cassette recorder.

Martha smiled sadly.

"Mr. Lawson recorded every important meeting."

Claire looked stunned.

"Even private ones?"

"Especially private ones."

Technicians quickly digitized the tape.

The recording crackled with age.

Then two familiar voices emerged.

William Lawson.

Richard Hawthorne.

William sounded angry.

"You'll never touch my granddaughter's inheritance."

Richard answered calmly.

"People die every day."

A long silence followed.

Then William spoke again.

"If anything happens to me..."

The tape abruptly ended.

The room fell silent.

Claire slowly removed her headphones.

"It isn't a confession."

Martha nodded.

"But it tells you exactly where to look."

May you like

Claire smiled.

"And that's all I need."
