Chapter 14 – The Last Desperate Move

Richard Hawthorne received confirmation before sunrise.

"They've left the hospital."

"Destination unknown."

He didn't need to guess.

William Lawson had always loved the lighthouse.

Richard slammed his fist onto his desk.

"Prepare the helicopter."

Across the state line, Marcus, David, and Detective Claire Donovan drove north with two federal agents following behind.

Claire refused to leave the evidence unprotected.

"If those documents exist," she said, "they'll finish this case."

Hours later, the Atlantic Ocean came into view.

The old lighthouse stood alone on a rocky cliff, battered by decades of storms.

David unlocked the rusted iron door.

Inside, everything was covered in dust.

Marcus swept his flashlight across the circular room.

"There has to be something."

David remembered William's favorite saying.

"Every light has a keeper."

His eyes drifted to the enormous brass lantern at the top of the tower.

He climbed the narrow staircase.

Behind the lantern was a loose stone.

David pulled it free.

A steel lockbox slid forward.

Marcus caught it before it fell.

Inside were original stock certificates.

Corporate ledgers.

Signed wills.

Bank records.

And one sealed envelope addressed to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Claire carefully opened it.

The first page listed dozens of offshore accounts linked to Richard Hawthorne.

The second named executives, lawyers, and politicians who had accepted bribes over two decades.

Claire looked at Marcus.

"This isn't just corporate fraud."

"It's organized financial crime."

Suddenly—

The roar of helicopter blades echoed overhead.

Richard had arrived.

Outside, black SUVs raced toward the lighthouse.

Marcus looked through the window.

"They're here."

Federal agents drew their weapons.

Claire calmly picked up her radio.

"They're too late."
