Chapter 4 – The First Arrest

The atmosphere outside the operating room had shifted.

What had begun as whispered speculation among hospital staff was now a tightly controlled crime scene. Uniformed officers stood at both ends of the corridor, keeping reporters and curious guests from the charity gala away from the maternity wing.

Marcus hadn't moved.

His eyes remained fixed on the red surgical light.

Every passing second stretched into another test of patience.

Detective Claire Donovan approached quietly.

"I've reviewed the surveillance footage."

Marcus looked at her.

"There isn't much to investigate."

Claire nodded.

"There isn't."

She held up a sealed evidence envelope containing three encrypted copies of the recordings.

"Multiple camera angles."

"No interruptions."

"No missing footage."

"The assault is clear."

Marcus exhaled slowly.

"What happens now?"

Claire's expression remained professional.

"We're requesting an arrest warrant immediately."

Before Marcus could answer, raised voices echoed from the opposite end of the hallway.

"What is the meaning of this?"

Isabella Rossi marched toward them, followed by her attorney, Victor Langford.

She had changed into a cream-colored suit provided by her assistant after surrendering her bloodstained gown to investigators.

Despite everything, she still carried herself like someone accustomed to controlling every room she entered.

Victor stepped forward.

"My client has already cooperated."

Claire remained calm.

"Ms. Rossi, based on the evidence collected tonight, you are under arrest for aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury and endangering an unborn child."

Silence swept through the corridor.

Isabella stared at her.

"You can't be serious."

Claire produced the warrant.

"I'm very serious."

Two officers stepped beside Isabella.

She laughed once—a sharp, disbelieving sound.

"This is Marcus' doing."

Marcus finally turned toward her.

His voice was steady.

"No."

"You did this."

One officer gently took Isabella's wrist.

She jerked away.

"You have no idea who my family is!"

Another officer secured the handcuffs.

The metallic click echoed through the hallway.

For the first time since entering the suite, Isabella's confidence cracked.

She looked at Marcus, expecting hesitation.

A plea.

A compromise.

Instead, he watched without speaking.

There would be no negotiation.

No private settlement.

No billionaire's influence to make the charges disappear.

As officers escorted Isabella toward the elevator, television cameras downstairs captured the unexpected sight of one of the city's most celebrated socialites leaving the hospital in handcuffs.

By sunrise, every news station in the country would be asking the same question:

Why had Isabella Rossi attacked Marcus Thorne's pregnant wife?
