Chapter 7 - EVELYN CHOSE HERSELF

Evelyn Whitmore requested a meeting with Claire.

Claire refused to meet privately.

They gathered at Naomi’s office.

Evelyn arrived in a cream suit.

Perfect hair.

Perfect posture.

The same woman who once told Claire that Vance money made her “new rich.”

Now her hands shook slightly when she opened her purse.

“I did not know Grant hit you.”

Claire stared at her.

“You knew about Vanessa.”

Evelyn looked away.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“About a year.”

“You said nothing.”

“I believed it would end.”

Claire almost smiled.

“Did you also believe the fake voting proxy would end?”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

Arthur leaned back.

There it was.

Evelyn knew.

Naomi said.

“This conversation ends unless you intend to be truthful.”

Evelyn opened a folder.

“I intend to save myself.”

At least that was honest.

She had documents.

Emails.

Board notes.

Payment authorizations.

Grant had pressured Whitmore executives to inflate project values.

Lewis Crane created structures to hide debt.

Evelyn signed some of them.

Then Grant began shifting blame toward her.

“He was preparing to say I acted alone.”

Evelyn said.

Claire looked at her.

“And now you want us to save you.”

“No.”

“I want a deal with investigators.”

“Then talk to investigators.”

Evelyn’s eyes hardened.

“You think your father is clean?”

Arthur said nothing.

Claire leaned forward.

“Careful.”

Evelyn slid over a twenty-year-old agreement.

Vance Logistics had once financed transportation infrastructure used by Whitmore Development.

Arthur’s company received preferred repayment rights.

Nothing illegal.

But Grant had used the old agreement to tell Evelyn that Arthur secretly controlled Whitmore debt.

That lie fueled years of resentment.

Evelyn looked toward Arthur.

“Grant told me you planned to take our company.”

Arthur finally spoke.

“If I wanted your company, Evelyn, I would have bought your lenders.”

Silence.

Arthur continued.

“I didn’t want it.”

“Grant needed you afraid enough to approve his shortcuts.”

Evelyn looked down.

She had been manipulated too.

But like everyone else, she had chosen what to do with that fear.

She had chosen fraud.

Then she revealed the reason Grant feared her.

The six slaps were not the first violence she had witnessed.

Three years earlier, Grant struck a former Whitmore executive during a closed meeting.

The executive resigned.

The company paid a confidential settlement.

Lewis Crane buried the incident.

Evelyn signed the payment.

Claire felt sick.

“You knew he could become violent.”

“Yes.”

“And when you knew he was cheating on me?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“I told myself marriage was different.”

Claire stood.

“No.”

“You told yourself I was expendable.”

Evelyn did not deny it.

Before leaving, she handed Naomi a flash drive.

“Grant keeps a second set of books.”

“Where?”

“Not at the company.”

“Where?”

May you like

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“Vanessa knows.”
