Chapter 10 - THE FORTY-EIGHT-HOUR CLOCK

Grant chose control.

He always did.

Instead of pledging his shares, he tried to raise money elsewhere.

Private lenders.

Foreign funds.

Family offices.

Nobody wanted the risk.

Then Grant called Arthur directly.

Arthur recorded the call with counsel present.

“I need the Vance guarantee restored.”

“No.”

“This affects thousands of jobs.”

Arthur’s voice remained calm.

“You endangered those jobs when you hid debt.”

“You’re punishing innocent people because Claire is emotional.”

Arthur paused.

“Say that again.”

Grant realized the mistake.

He changed direction.

“Look.”

“I’m sorry she got hurt.”

“She got hurt?”

Arthur repeated.

Grant exhaled.

“I lost my temper.”

“You hit my daughter six times.”

Silence.

Then Grant said.

“I need seventy-five million.”

Arthur almost sounded amused.

“You called the man whose daughter you threw barefoot into a storm and asked him for seventy-five million dollars?”

“This is business.”

“No.”

Arthur answered.

“This is accounting.”

Then he ended the call.

Grant’s lenders moved the next morning.

Three projects entered default review.

Contractors stopped work.

Whitmore stock in private secondary markets collapsed.

Employees demanded answers.

Grant held an emergency company meeting.

He blamed Vance Logistics.

He blamed lenders.

He blamed Vanessa.

Then, according to Nathan, he blamed Claire.

“She’s doing this to destroy me.”

Nathan replied.

“No.”

“You did this before she knew the numbers.”

That afternoon, Nathan resigned publicly.

He turned over the secondary books.

Two board members followed.

Then Evelyn resigned as chairwoman in exchange for cooperation with investigators.

Grant became chairman and CEO of a company he suddenly could not finance.

It looked like victory.

It was a crown inside a burning room.

Claire watched the news from her father’s home.

She had not returned permanently to Highland Park.

The house was hers.

But she was not ready to sleep where Grant had hit her.

Arthur understood.

“You can sell it.”

“Maybe.”

“You can keep it.”

“Maybe.”

“You don’t have to decide because of him.”

Claire looked at her father.

That was the first freedom she felt.

Not revenge.

Choice.

Then Marcus entered.

“We have an issue.”

“What?”

“Someone accessed the Highland Park security system last night.”

Claire went still.

“Who?”

“Grant’s old administrator code.”

“That was disabled.”

“It was.”

“Someone used a legacy maintenance pathway.”

Security footage showed a hooded figure entering the rear service door.

They walked directly to Grant’s former office.

Five minutes later, they left carrying nothing visible.

Police searched the room.

One item was missing.

The EXIT folder.

Someone was trying to erase proof Grant planned Claire’s humiliation and divorce before the assault.

But Grant had been under surveillance at his hotel all night.

Vanessa was cooperating.

Evelyn was with federal investigators.

May you like

Lewis Crane had surrendered his passport.

Someone else had been inside the conspiracy.
