Chapter 4 - THE MARRIAGE WAS ALSO A BUSINESS PLAN

Claire read the proxy slowly.
The language was dense.
Deliberately dense.
Grant had told her it allowed him to vote on routine household investments.
In reality, it granted broad authority over her Vance Logistics shares.
Thirty-two percent.
Enough to influence board control.
Enough to negotiate mergers.
Enough to make Grant one of the most powerful private logistics shareholders in America without owning a single share himself.
Claire looked at Naomi.
“Would this have worked?”
“Not completely.”
“Your trust has safeguards.”
“But it could have created years of litigation.”
Arthur stared at the document.
“Who drafted it?”
Naomi pointed to the footer.
Whitmore Legal Services.
Grant’s internal legal department.
Claire laughed once.
She felt sick.
“He used company lawyers to prepare a document against his wife.”
Arthur asked.
“When did he start pressuring you?”
“About six months ago.”
“Anything happen around then?”
Claire thought.
Grant began talking obsessively about expansion.
Ports.
Warehouses.
A massive intermodal terminal outside Houston.
He said Whitmore Development was preparing for the biggest deal in its history.
Then she remembered something else.
Grant asked whether Arthur planned to retire.
Claire told him no.
Grant seemed irritated.
Naomi placed another file on the table.
The Houston terminal project required almost two billion dollars in financing.
Whitmore Development did not have enough collateral.
But control over part of Vance Logistics could change lender confidence dramatically.
Claire looked at Arthur.
“He didn’t want my shares because he wanted my money.”
“No.”
Arthur said.
“He wanted my company’s balance sheet behind his promises.”
That afternoon, Grant finally called Claire.
She did not answer.
Then he sent a message.
WE NEED TO TALK WITHOUT YOUR FATHER INTERFERING.
Claire stared at the screen.
Another message arrived.
VANESSA MEANT NOTHING.
Then.
YOU KNOW I LOVE YOU.
Finally.
DON’T LET ONE BAD NIGHT DESTROY FIVE YEARS.
Claire handed the phone to Naomi.
“Save everything.”
Naomi nodded.
Then Claire typed one response.
SIX SLAPS ARE NOT ONE BAD NIGHT.
Grant called immediately.
She blocked him.
That evening, police delivered the temporary protective order.
Grant could not return to the Highland Park home.
He could not contact Claire directly.
He could not remove marital property.
He could not possess firearms while the order remained in effect.
Grant exploded.
Security footage from the hotel lobby showed him throwing the court papers against a marble column.
Vanessa was beside him.
Still wearing Claire’s pearl earrings.
That was her second mistake.
The earrings were individually insured and registered as part of Claire’s mother’s estate.
Police already had photographs showing Vanessa wearing them.
Claire reported them stolen.
By midnight, Vanessa returned the earrings through her attorney.
But she also returned something Claire had not reported missing.
A tiny brass key.
May you like
Claire recognized it immediately.
It opened a locked drawer inside Grant’s home office.
