Chapter 3 - VANESSA’S FIRST MISTAKE

Vanessa stayed in the Highland Park house until 2:37 a.m.

Claire knew because the security system belonged to her trust.

Marcus Hale watched the live access log.

Grant left at 12:14.

Vanessa remained.

At 1:03, she entered Claire’s dressing room.

At 1:18, she opened Claire’s jewelry safe.

At 1:42, she called someone from the upstairs hallway.

At 2:11, she carried two bags toward the garage.

Marcus called police before she reached the vehicle.

Officers stopped her on the driveway.

Inside the bags were Claire’s jewelry.

Designer handbags.

Two watches.

And a leather document folder.

Vanessa immediately claimed Claire had given her permission.

Claire had not.

By morning, Vanessa had a lawyer.

So did Grant.

So did Grant’s mother, Evelyn Whitmore.

That surprised Claire.

“Why does Evelyn need counsel?”

Naomi answered.

“Because her name appears on several suspicious property transfers.”

Claire sat straighter.

Grant’s parents had built Whitmore Development thirty years earlier.

Grant took control after his father died.

Evelyn remained board chairwoman.

She treated Claire like a temporary visitor from the moment Grant proposed.

Too ambitious.

Too independent.

Too attached to her own family.

Too unwilling to move Vance assets under Whitmore management.

Now Naomi showed Claire a deed.

A luxury condo in Austin.

Owned by a Whitmore subsidiary.

Transferred last year to Evelyn for one dollar.

Another property in Scottsdale followed.

Then a ranch near Fredericksburg.

“All company assets?”

Claire asked.

“Previously.”

“Why transfer them?”

“Possibly to move value outside lender reach.”

Arthur looked toward his attorney.

“Fraudulent conveyance?”

“Potentially.”

Claire remembered Grant complaining about corporate debt while Evelyn renovated the ranch kitchen with Italian stone.

She had never connected the two.

Then Marcus entered.

“Mrs. Whitmore.”

Claire looked up.

“We recovered exterior security audio from last night.”

“What audio?”

“The front camera recorded part of the incident before the door closed.”

He played it.

Grant’s voice.

Get out, Claire.

Then Vanessa.

Finally.

Then Grant again.

Once her father calms down, she’ll come crawling back.

Vanessa laughed.

And the shares?

Grant answered.

Leave that to me.

Claire stopped breathing.

Arthur’s eyes sharpened.

“What shares?”

There was only one thing Grant had wanted for years.

Claire’s Vance voting stock.

Naomi leaned forward.

“What exactly has Grant asked you to sign recently?”

Claire thought.

Insurance renewals.

Tax authorizations.

A family estate update.

One document Grant brought home three weeks earlier.

He said it simplified spousal voting rights.

Claire refused to sign without reading it.

Grant became furious.

She had almost forgotten.

Naomi asked.

“Do you still have a copy?”

“No.”

Arthur’s phone rang.

His general counsel.

A copy had just been located.

Grant had sent the unsigned document directly to Vance corporate counsel asking whether Claire’s signature would be sufficient.

It was not an estate update.

May you like

It was a voting proxy.

If Claire signed it, Grant would control her Vance shares for ten years.
