Chapter 12 - THE SIXTH SLAP BECAME EVIDENCE

Grant’s defense team built its strategy around the assault first.

They called it a marital argument.

They suggested Claire exaggerated the number of strikes.

They said rain and stress affected her memory.

Then Marcus produced the front entrance audio.

Claire’s cracked phone contained an automatic emergency recording triggered when it detected repeated impact.

She had enabled the safety feature months earlier after a friend recommended it.

She forgot it existed.

The recording was imperfect.

But six distinct impacts could be heard.

Between them.

Claire’s voice.

Stop.

Grant.

Take them off.

Another impact.

Grant shouting.

Everything in this house belongs to me.

Another.

Vanessa laughing once.

Another impact.

Claire gasping.

Then the final strike.

The marble console.

The door opening.

Grant’s voice.

Get out, Claire.

The recording lasted forty-three seconds.

Forty-three seconds ended every argument about one impulsive moment.

Grant had time between each slap to stop.

He did not.

Vanessa had time to intervene.

She did not.

Then the security footage showed Claire outside barefoot.

Grant throwing the bag.

Vanessa standing behind him in Claire’s robe.

Jurors would see it eventually.

Grant knew.

His attorneys reopened plea discussions in the assault case.

Claire was asked for input.

She did not demand maximum punishment.

She demanded no language calling the assault accidental.

No language describing it as mutual.

No statement claiming she provoked him.

The truth had to remain intact.

Grant refused those terms.

He still wanted one thing.

Control of the story.

So the case moved forward.

Meanwhile, forensic accountants traced another $34 million in Whitmore funds into Grant’s private entities.

Lewis Crane began cooperating.

Evelyn expanded her testimony.

Thomas turned over offshore records.

One by one, the people Grant believed he owned started protecting themselves.

Then Vanessa asked to speak directly to Claire.

Naomi advised against it.

Claire agreed only with attorneys present.

Vanessa entered wearing simple black clothes.

No jewelry.

The pearl earrings were already back inside Claire’s safe.

Vanessa sat.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire waited.

Vanessa looked frustrated by the silence.

“I know you hate me.”

“No.”

Claire said.

Vanessa blinked.

“I don’t want to spend enough energy on you to hate you.”

That hurt more than anger.

Vanessa swallowed.

“Grant told me your marriage was dead.”

“You were in my robe.”

“I know.”

“You wore my mother’s earrings.”

“I know.”

“You smiled while he threw me outside.”

Tears appeared in Vanessa’s eyes.

“I thought he was choosing me.”

Claire looked at her.

“He was choosing himself.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know that now.”

Then she revealed the final betrayal Grant planned for her.

After receiving Claire’s proxy, Grant intended to end the affair.

He had already drafted a confidentiality agreement for Vanessa.

Payment.

Two million dollars.

Leave Texas.

Never speak.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“I thought I was replacing you.”

“No.”

Claire said.

May you like

“You were another exit document.”

For the first time, Vanessa understood exactly what Claire meant.
