Chapter 16 - LEWIS CRANE FINALLY TALKED
Lewis Crane had spent months protecting himself carefully.
Then prosecutors showed him Thomas’s records.
Grant’s secondary books.
Vanessa’s testimony.
Evelyn’s emails.
Lewis realized everyone else was building exits.
He wanted one too.
His cooperation meeting lasted nine hours.
He admitted designing the voting proxy.
He admitted arranging the private investigator.
He admitted discussing strategies to weaken Arthur’s reputation.
He admitted helping Grant hide debt.
Then he described the Houston project.
Grant intentionally inflated construction contracts.
Certain vendors returned money through consulting agreements.
Some funds went to Grant’s private land companies.
Lewis knew.
Thomas moved the money.
Evelyn approved related board resolutions.
Nathan Reed had objected.
That was why Grant threatened him.
The fraud exceeded $200 million.
Grant faced serious federal exposure.
But Lewis revealed something Claire did not expect.
Grant originally resisted using the affair against her.
“What changed?”
Investigators asked.
“Debt.”
Lewis answered.
“Grant believed he could fix everything with one Vance deal.”
“He became desperate.”
Claire heard about that later.
For a moment, she wondered whether desperation explained the man she married.
Then she rejected the thought.
Pressure reveals choices.
It does not make them for you.
Grant could have admitted failure.
He could have sold projects.
Asked for help.
Taken bankruptcy.
Lost status.
Instead, he chose Claire as collateral.
That was the defining act.
Lewis surrendered his license.
He agreed to plead guilty to financial offenses.
Thomas accepted a deal.
Evelyn’s case remained complicated.
Vanessa faced theft-related and conspiracy charges but received consideration for substantial cooperation.
Grant refused every major financial plea.
He still insisted Whitmore Development’s valuations were defensible.
Then the government produced his personal notebook.
Thomas had photographed it months earlier.
One page contained a sentence Grant wrote after a failed lender meeting.
IF CLAIRE SIGNS, I WIN.
IF SHE DOESN’T, END THE MARRIAGE HARD.
Claire read the line.
End the marriage hard.
That was Grant’s version of strategy.
Human beings reduced to verbs.
Then another page.
VANESSA USEFUL UNTIL CLOSE.
Claire sent the photograph to Vanessa’s attorney.
She did not need to.
Prosecutors already had it.
But she wanted Vanessa to see.
Vanessa called Naomi afterward.
“Tell Claire she was right.”
Naomi asked.
“About what?”
“I wasn’t replacing her.”
“I was another document.”
