The intruder was identified through traffic cameras.
Thomas Whitmore.
Grant’s younger brother.
Claire barely knew him.
Thomas lived in Denver and claimed he hated family business.
He attended Christmas.
Weddings.
Funerals.
Then disappeared.
Apparently, he had never truly left.
Thomas controlled several shell companies used by Whitmore Development.
He held hidden interests in two projects.
And he had received more than eight million dollars from Grant over five years.
Police found the EXIT folder inside his rental car.
Thomas asked for a lawyer.
Then immediately asked for a deal.
Claire almost admired the efficiency.
Thomas explained the family structure.
Grant made decisions.
Evelyn protected reputation.
Lewis designed paperwork.
Thomas moved assets when something became too dangerous to keep visible.
“And Vanessa?”
Detective Mitchell asked.
“Vanessa was Grant’s fantasy.”
Thomas said.
“He thought she would become useful after Claire left.”
Claire watched from the observation room.
Useful.
That was how the Whitmore men described women.
Asset.
Proxy.
Fantasy.
Problem.
Never person.
Then Thomas revealed the largest fraud yet.
The Houston project had never been intended to succeed under its current structure.
Grant bought nearby land personally through hidden companies.
Whitmore Development paid inflated construction costs that increased surrounding property values.
If the company collapsed, Grant’s private land could still be worth hundreds of millions.
He had built a personal escape route using company money.
Employees and investors carried the risk.
Grant kept the upside.
Arthur looked at the records.
“That’s why he wouldn’t pledge his shares.”
Naomi nodded.
“He never planned to save the company.”
“He planned to survive it.”
Claire felt nauseated.
Even Grant’s loyalty to Whitmore Development had been fake.
Everything was about Grant.
Then Thomas said something unexpected.
“Claire was supposed to be part of the exit.”
“How?”
“Grant wanted Vance to acquire Whitmore assets after the crash.”
Arthur stared at the screen.
“He expected me to buy his disaster?”
Thomas nodded.
“With Claire’s voting proxy.”
Grant’s full plan emerged.
Obtain Claire’s Vance control.
Push the risky Whitmore projects toward distress.
Use Vance to acquire selected assets cheaply.
Leave creditors with the losses.
Preserve Grant’s personal holdings.
Become a major Vance-influenced developer afterward.
He was not trying to save one empire.
He was trying to climb into another after burning his own.
Claire whispered.
“He never wanted to be my husband.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Maybe he did once.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“Then somewhere along the way, being my husband became less valuable than owning what came with me.”
That night, Grant was arrested on financial charges unrelated to the assault.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Evidence tampering allegations pending.
