Chapter 5 - THE DRAWER GRANT NEVER EXPECTED HER TO OPEN

Police accompanied Claire back to the house.
She refused to enter alone.
The mansion felt different.
Same chandelier.
Same marble console.
Same dining table.
But the silence no longer felt elegant.
It felt staged.
Claire stopped near the front door.
That was where the sixth slap had thrown her.
She touched the edge of the console.
Then kept walking.
Grant’s office was locked.
Marcus opened it using the property-owner access system.
Claire inserted the brass key into the lower desk drawer.
Inside were three folders.
VANCE.
VANESSA.
EXIT.
Claire opened VANCE first.
Copies of her trust documents.
Arthur’s medical history.
Board member profiles.
A list of Vance shareholders.
Notes beside several names.
WEAK.
LOYAL TO ARTHUR.
MIGHT SELL.
Grant had been mapping her father’s company.
The VANESSA folder contained apartment leases.
Travel receipts.
Jewelry purchases.
A monthly payment schedule.
Grant had spent nearly $600,000 on Vanessa in eighteen months.
Some payments came from Whitmore Development.
Naomi photographed everything.
Then Claire opened EXIT.
Her own name appeared on the first page.
A draft divorce petition.
It accused Claire of emotional cruelty.
Financial abandonment.
Infidelity.
Claire almost laughed.
“Infidelity?”
Naomi turned another page.
There were photographs.
Claire hugging a man outside a Dallas restaurant.
Naomi studied him.
“Who is that?”
“My cousin.”
The photographs were framed to hide his face.
Another page listed potential witnesses.
Grant’s assistant.
A bartender.
A private investigator.
Claire felt cold.
“He was preparing to accuse me before I knew Vanessa existed.”
Naomi nodded.
The final document was worse.
A proposed settlement.
Claire would keep the Highland Park house.
Grant would keep Whitmore Development.
But Claire would grant Grant a ten-year Vance voting proxy.
“He wanted to trade me my own house for control of my own shares.”
Claire whispered.
Arthur stood behind her.
“He expected shame to make you sign quickly.”
The assault suddenly looked different.
Maybe Grant had not planned the exact six slaps.
But he had been preparing for a violent end to the marriage.
Then Marcus found a small recorder behind the desk.
Grant used it for meeting notes.
One file was dated nine days earlier.
Grant’s voice.
Then Vanessa’s.
Vanessa asked.
“What if Claire refuses the proxy again?”
Grant replied.
“She won’t after she sees us together.”
“And if she does?”
Silence.
Then Grant said.
“Then she leaves with nothing but humiliation.”
Claire stopped the recording.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Naomi finally asked.
“Do you want to hear the rest?”
Claire looked at the EXIT folder.
“Yes.”
The recording continued.
Vanessa laughed.
“What about Arthur?”
Grant answered.
“The old man can’t protect her forever.”
Then another male voice entered the conversation.
A voice Claire recognized.
Evelyn Whitmore’s personal attorney.
He said.

“Arthur doesn’t have to die.”
“We only need the board to believe he’s declining.”
