There was a second folder.
BEHAVIORAL CONTINGENCY.
Inside.
Notes about my work schedule.
Medical appointments.
One prescription for migraine medication.
Statements from relatives describing me as “controlling.”
Photographs of me leaving therapy after my mother died.
Then a draft petition.
TEMPORARY FINANCIAL PROTECTION DUE TO EMOTIONAL INSTABILITY.
My marriage had apparently become a research project.
The plan was simple.
If I refused the condo transfer and challenged the forged deed, the family would claim I had become unstable under work stress.
The dinner was supposed to provide witnesses.
Twenty relatives.
All ready to describe me as angry.
Ungrateful.
Aggressive.
Then Adrian was supposed to appear patient.
Concerned.
Reasonable.
He ruined that by picking up the plate.
The irony almost made Naomi smile.
“They invited witnesses to prove you were unstable.”
“And instead created twenty witnesses to an assault.”
Not all twenty were willing to help.
At first.
Some claimed they had been looking away.
Others remembered only shouting.
One aunt said she could not tell whether the plate slipped.
Then police showed her the dining-room photographs.
Adrian’s shoulder position.
The broken plate.
My injury.
Maya’s statement.
The 911 recording.
Suddenly memories improved.
Then one cousin admitted Charles had coached the family after I left for the ambulance.
“What did he say?”
Ruiz asked.
“He said nobody should speculate.”
“And?”
“He said if asked, we should describe the evening as an argument that got out of hand.”
“Before police interviewed you?”
“Yes.”
That became potential witness coordination.
Another layer.
The family’s strongest skill was not violence.
It was narrative management.
But narratives weaken when documents exist.
The basement had documents.
The house had security footage.
