Chapter 1 - WHAT WAS UNDER THE VINEYARD

“Tell them to check the basement.”

Maya’s voice was barely louder than the sirens outside.

But every member of Adrian’s family heard her.

Charles moved first.

Not toward me.

Toward the hallway.

Detective Marcus Ruiz entered through the front door before Charles made it three steps.

Two uniformed officers followed him.

An EMT came straight toward me.

“What happened?”

“My husband struck me in the head with a ceramic plate.”

I pointed toward Adrian.

“The broken plate is still on the table.”

Ruiz looked at the blood on my cheek.

Then at Adrian.

Then at Maya.

“What about the basement?”

Charles interrupted.

“There is nothing in the basement except wine.”

Maya laughed once.

It sounded almost like a sob.

“That’s a lie.”

Her husband, Lucas, had finally returned from the hallway with their children.

He stopped when he heard her.

“Maya.”

She turned toward him.

“Don’t.”

One word.

Lucas went silent.

Ruiz looked between them.

“Ma’am, what are we looking for?”

Maya swallowed.

“Behind the third rack in the reserve cellar.”

“There’s a false wall.”

Eleanor’s face became gray.

Adrian stepped toward Maya.

“You have no idea what you’re saying.”

Ruiz immediately moved between them.

“Sir, stay where you are.”

I watched Adrian stop.

That alone felt unreal.

For years, everyone around him moved when he wanted something.

Now he was the one being ordered not to move.

Two officers went downstairs with Maya.

Ruiz remained with us.

The EMT pressed gauze against my temple.

“You may need stitches.”

“I’m going to the hospital.”

I said.

“But I’m not leaving until I know what’s downstairs.”

Eleanor leaned toward me.

“Claire, whatever Maya thinks she saw—”

“Maya didn’t say she saw something.”

I interrupted.

“She said she knew where to look.”

Eleanor’s mouth closed.

Ten minutes passed.

Then fifteen.

Nobody touched the food.

The anniversary? No—this was just the family dinner where they demanded my condo.

The white tablecloth remained stained with wine, sauce, and my blood.

Finally, footsteps came up the stairs.

One officer carried two file boxes.

The second carried a small black security recorder.

Maya followed them.

Her face was colorless.

Ruiz opened the first box.

Folders.

Hundreds of pages.

Property records.

Bank statements.

Photographs.

Copies of passports.

Copies of driver’s licenses.

Then I saw my name.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

Beneath it.

PACIFIC HEIGHTS UNIT 4A.

Ruiz opened the folder.

Inside was a deed transferring my condo to Eleanor.

My signature was already on it.

I had never signed that deed.
