Chapter 7 - LUCAS FINALLY STOPPED PROTECTING THEM
Lucas asked to cooperate.
Maya did not ask him to.
That mattered.
For years, he had told himself silence protected his children.
Now his children had watched their mother step between Adrian and another injured woman.
They had begun asking questions.
Lucas could not answer without lying.
So he stopped.
He admitted Charles built the basement system.
Bellamy designed the legal strategy.
Eleanor handled family pressure.
Adrian was used when someone needed intimidation.
Lucas called himself the coward.
“What did you do?”
Ruiz asked.
“I sat there.”
Exactly like Adrian had at dinner before striking me.
Different actions.
Same family training.
Lucas admitted he knew the condo dinner was an ambush.
He knew the other units had been purchased.
He knew Charles needed my property.
He knew Bellamy had prepared transfer documents.
“Did you know Claire’s signature was forged?”
“No.”
“Did you ask?”
Lucas looked down.
“No.”
Another family built on selective ignorance.
Then he revealed the part that made Adrian’s assault even worse.
Before dinner, Charles told Adrian.
“If Claire gets dramatic, end it quickly.”
Ruiz asked.
“What did that mean?”
Lucas answered.
“In our family?”
“It meant frighten her until she stopped arguing.”
My attorney played the audio from the dining room again.
The plate.
My blood.
Eleanor saying it was an accident.
Charles saying we could handle it privately.
Adrian demanding my phone.
Everything fit the family’s established method.
Pressure.
Fear.
Compliance.
Rewriting.
Only this time, police arrived before the rewriting began.
Then Lucas gave investigators the password to Charles’s second laptop.
It contained financial records showing Harrington Development was in far worse condition than anyone knew.
The condo deal was not simply profitable.
It was necessary.
Without the eleven-million-dollar gain, Charles could breach loan covenants on the vineyard and two commercial developments.
