Chapter 16 - THE TRIAL PLAYED THE DINNER BACK
Adrian’s criminal case moved first.
The assault charge was supported by my injury.
The 911 call.
Witnesses.
Maya.
The broken plate.
The prosecution did not need to prove every family conspiracy to prove what he did.
Still, motive mattered.
The jury heard part of the basement recording.
Family discussing my property.
Charles predicting resistance.
Adrian agreeing to “make her understand.”
Then the dinner witnesses testified.
One aunt admitted she initially minimized the attack because Eleanor asked everyone to protect the marriage.
Another relative said Adrian looked angry before touching the plate.
Maya testified last.
The defense asked.
“You dislike Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“Because of events involving you years earlier?”
“Yes.”
“So you have reason to exaggerate?”
Maya looked toward the jury.
“I had reason to stay silent.”
“I don’t anymore.”
Then the prosecution played my 911 call.
My voice.
Controlled.
My husband has attacked me.
Approximately twenty adult witnesses.
I am bleeding.
I am dizzy.
He is approaching me now.
Then Adrian’s voice in the background.
Give me the phone.
There was no marital misunderstanding inside that recording.
Only action.
The jury convicted him on the supported assault offense.
The forgery and conspiracy matters continued separately.
I did not feel victorious.
I felt tired.
But one thing changed.
