Chapter 15 - MAYA LEFT LUCAS

Maya filed for divorce too.
Not because Lucas locked her in the cellar.
He had not.
Because he watched it happen.
Then spent four years asking her to protect the people who did.
Lucas did not fight her decision.
“I thought keeping the family together protected the kids.”
He told her.
Maya answered.
“They learned fear from us.”
That became her line.
She moved into a townhouse near the children’s school.
For the first month, she slept with every interior door open.
Then one night, she closed her bedroom door.
Because she wanted to.
Not because someone locked it.
She texted me the next morning.
I CLOSED IT MYSELF.
I understood exactly why that mattered.
My own recovery looked different.
For weeks, I could not use the porcelain dinner set.
I packed it away.
Then I donated it.
Naomi asked whether that felt symbolic.
“No.”
I said.
“I just hate the plates.”
