Chapter 4 — The Collapse Begins

The first investor left at 11:47 p.m.
He didn’t say goodbye.
He didn’t finish his drink.
He simply stood from his chair, checked the message on his phone, and quietly walked toward the exit.
Adrian noticed.
“Daniel,” he called. “Where are you going?”
The man stopped.
For years, Adrian had been the person everyone wanted approval from.
The person who controlled meetings.
The person who decided who mattered.
But tonight, something had changed.
Daniel looked at him with disappointment.
“I should have looked closer at the numbers.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I trusted the wrong architect.”
The word struck harder than Adrian expected.
Architect.
Because that was what Mara had always been.
The person who designed everything.
Daniel left.
Then another investor stood.
Then another.
Within fifteen minutes, the room that had been filled with laughter became painfully silent.
Vanessa watched the powerful men she had spent years impressing walk away one by one.
Her confidence disappeared.
“This is temporary,” Adrian said.
Nobody answered.
Because everyone in that room understood something Adrian refused to accept.
A business could survive bad publicity.
It could survive market losses.
But it could not survive discovering that its foundation was built on lies.
Upstairs, Mara watched through the bedroom window.
The mansion lights reflected against the glass.
For years, this house had been her prison.
Tonight, it became evidence.
Every expensive painting.
Every piece of furniture.
Every luxury Adrian displayed to the world.
All of it had been purchased with the empire she quietly protected.
Her phone rang.
“Mrs. Morrison,” her attorney said.
“Yes?”
“The board meeting has been scheduled.”
“When?”
“Tomorrow morning.”
Mara looked at Adrian standing alone downstairs.
“Good.”
The attorney hesitated.
“Are you sure you want to do this while you’re eight months pregnant?”
Mara placed a hand over her stomach.
“Yes.”

Her voice was calm.
“Because my children deserve to be born into a world where their father cannot hurt people just because he has money.”
