Chapter 10 — The Final Confession
Adrian entered the hospital room slowly.
For the first time since Mara had known him, he looked uncertain.
Not powerful.
Not untouchable.
Just human.
His eyes moved toward the two newborn babies sleeping peacefully.
For a moment, something changed in his expression.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I never thought I would see this,” he whispered.
Mara sat quietly, holding one of the twins.
“See what?”
He looked at her.
“How much I destroyed.”
The words surprised her.
Because Adrian rarely admitted anything.
For years, every mistake had been someone else’s fault.
The market.
The investors.
His competitors.
Even Mara.
Never him.
“I found the old documents,” he said.
Mara’s eyes narrowed.
“What documents?”
“The ones I made years ago.”
Silence filled the room.
Adrian looked down.
“The plan to remove you.”
Mara already knew.
But hearing him admit it was different.
“I convinced myself it was business,” he continued.
“I told myself everyone sacrifices something to become successful.”
His voice cracked.
“But I wasn’t building an empire.”
He looked at his hands.
“I was destroying the person who built it.”
Mara watched him carefully.
She wanted to feel satisfaction.
She wanted him to suffer.
But instead, she felt something unexpected.
Nothing.
Because she had already moved beyond him.
“You ruined yourself, Adrian.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
“You lost your company.”
“Yes.”
“You lost your reputation.”
“Yes.”
“You lost Vanessa.”
A bitter smile appeared.
“That was never real.”
Mara looked away.
“Then why are you here?”
Adrian took a breath.
“To ask for something I don’t deserve.”
“What?”
“Forgiveness.”
The room became silent.
Mara looked at her children.
Then back at him.
“I can forgive you.”
Adrian looked surprised.
“But forgiveness doesn’t mean access.”
Her voice remained steady.
“You will never hurt me again.”
For the first time, Adrian understood.
