Chapter 3 — The Party That Became a Funeral

Adrian returned upstairs twenty minutes later.

But the arrogance was gone.

The confidence.

The effortless smile.

Gone.

Mara noticed immediately.

People like Adrian were easy to read when they were losing control.

“What happened?” Vanessa asked from behind him.

Adrian ignored her.

His eyes locked onto Mara.

“You did something.”

Mara remained seated on the floor.

Her expression was calm.

“What makes you think that?”

“My accounts are frozen.”

The words hung in the room.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“What?”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You think you’re clever?”

Mara looked at him quietly.

“No.”

Her voice was soft.

“I think I was patient.”

That answer terrified him more than anger would have.

Because anger meant emotion.

Emotion meant weakness.

But Mara had none left.

“You don’t understand what you’ve done,” Adrian whispered.

Mara almost laughed.

For years, he had said those exact words whenever she questioned him.

Now they sounded different.

“You’re right,” she said.

“I don’t understand what I’ve done.”

She slowly stood, one hand protecting her stomach.

“I understand what you did.”

Adrian froze.

The difference mattered.

“You destroyed your marriage.”

A pause.

“You endangered your children.”

Another pause.

“You built an empire using the person you treated like property.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You’re insane.”

Mara turned toward her.

“No.”

Her eyes were cold.

“I’m awake.”

Downstairs, the investors began receiving messages.

One by one.

Confidential reports.

Ownership documents.

Evidence.

The truth Adrian buried was finally reaching daylight.

And by sunrise…
