Chapter 6 - THE RECIPE WITH NUMBERS IN THE MARGINS

Teresa entered the mansion kitchen that night.

For the first time, no dinner order waited on the counter.

No one had left a list of allergies, preferences, or last-minute guests.

The room felt unfamiliar without demands.

She opened the drawer where Manuel kept recipes.

The mole recipe lay beneath a stack of menus.

Numbers had been written in the margins.

Teresa had noticed them before.

She assumed Manuel was adjusting ingredient quantities.

Lucy examined the page.

“These are not cooking measurements.”

Beside the ancho peppers, Manuel had written 10-18-47.

Beside the sesame seeds, 6-2-19.

Beside the chocolate, VC-411.

Lucy entered the figures into her laptop.

The numbers matched dates in the corporate calendar.

The letters VC appeared beside payments authorized by Veronica.

Arthur joined them.

He recognized one of the account codes.

“Employee Medical Reserve.”

Cardenas Consolidated maintained a fund for injured warehouse and agricultural workers.

Nearly seven million dollars had disappeared from it.

The money moved into companies with names such as Desert Crown Consulting and Golden Vine Development.

Both companies were connected to Veronica’s longtime boyfriend, Adrian Vega.

The recipe was a ledger.

Manuel had hidden financial evidence in the one place Veronica never examined.

The kitchen.

Lucy found a small memory card taped beneath the recipe box.

It contained bank statements, contracts, and emails.

Veronica and Adrian planned to sell three Cardenas warehouses to Golden Vine for half their actual value.

The company would then lease the buildings back at inflated rates.

Within two years, Cardenas Consolidated would become financially dependent on Adrian’s company.

Veronica would gain private ownership while ordinary employees lost benefits.

Teresa sat at the preparation table where she had chopped vegetables for fifteen years.

“He knew everything.”

“He knew enough to be afraid,” Arthur said.

Lucy opened one final file.

It was a draft confession.

The document stated that Teresa had encouraged Manuel to move employee funds into private accounts.

The signature line remained blank.

The settlement lawyer had intended to attach Teresa’s name to it.

Teresa looked at Manuel’s warning again.

Do not sign anything until you have read every single page.
