Chapter 13 - ISABEL’S LAST WITNESS
After the trial, Arthur contacted an elderly woman named Elena Lozano.
She was Isabel and Manuel’s maternal cousin.
Elena lived in a care facility near San Antonio.
Teresa traveled there with Lucy.
The woman touched Teresa’s cheek.
“You look like Isabel when she was angry.”
Teresa almost laughed.
“Was she angry often?”
“After your grandfather erased her, yes.”
Elena explained that Isabel never stopped loving Manuel.
She also never forgave him for choosing the company.
Manuel had found her once, three years after Teresa was born.
He offered money.
Isabel refused because the offer required her to state that Miguel had stolen from the family.
“She would not purchase comfort with a lie,” Elena said.
Teresa closed her eyes.
Her mother had been given the same kind of choice Veronica later offered Teresa.
Money in exchange for a false signature.
Isabel refused.
“Did Manuel know Miguel was innocent?” Lucy asked.
“Yes.”
“But he was afraid to challenge Joaquin publicly.”
Teresa looked toward the window.
Manuel had eventually done the right thing.
But he had waited decades.
The trust restored property.
It did not restore Isabel’s lost years.
Elena handed Teresa a small cloth bundle.
Inside was Isabel’s recipe notebook.
The mole recipe appeared on the first page.
Beneath it, Isabel had written,
For Manuel, if he ever remembers that family is not the same as obedience.
Teresa pressed the notebook against her chest.
Her mother’s meal had not been only an act of love.
