Chapter 19 - THE NAME ON THE CLINIC
Lucy used part of the trust’s charitable distribution to establish a financial and medical center for low-income families.
She named it the Isabel Morales Cardenas Center.
Teresa noticed the order of the surnames.
“Morales first?”
“That was the name Grandma chose.”
“Cardenas was the name they took from her.”
Lucy shook her head.
“It was also hers.”
“She should not have to surrender either one.”
The center opened on October 18.
Its services included medical care, employment counseling, wage-theft investigations, and emergency childcare.
The first patient was a restaurant worker whose employer refused to pay for an injury.
The second was a housekeeper facing eviction after losing her job.
Teresa sat with her while Lucy reviewed the paperwork.
The woman looked embarrassed.
“I did not understand what I signed.”
Teresa took the contract.
“Then we begin again.”
“We read every page.”
The words traveled farther than Manuel could have imagined.
