Chapter 14 - THE MANSION WITHOUT A STAFF DOOR
Teresa decided not to keep the mansion as a private residence.
Lucy supported the decision.
“We could never use sixteen bedrooms.”
“Veronica managed.”
“Veronica also had four closets for shoes.”
Teresa smiled.
The east wing became the Isabel Cardenas Center for Domestic Workers.
It offered legal assistance, financial education, language classes, and career certification.
The old guest rooms became temporary housing for workers escaping abusive employers.
The mansion kitchen became a culinary training facility.
The family board resisted the plan.
One director called it sentimental.
Teresa answered,
“This house was maintained for decades by people whose names never appeared in the annual reports.”
“Recognizing that labor is not sentiment.”
“It is accounting.”
The narrow staff entrance was removed.
An architect widened the opening and connected it to the main foyer.
Teresa kept part of the original stone frame.
A plaque would later explain why the door had existed.
Lucy watched construction workers dismantle the old barrier.
“Does it feel good?”
Teresa considered the question.
“No.”
“It feels late.”
“That can still matter.”
“Yes.”
“Late can matter.”
Rafael moved out quietly.
Mateo entered a rehabilitation program for gambling addiction and accepted financial penalties for his role.
Gabriel, the youngest brother, remained with the company.
He had questioned Veronica’s transactions but lacked courage to challenge her publicly.
Teresa did not reward him for privately knowing the truth.
She required him to earn trust through action.
