Chapter 5 - MANUEL’S HIDDEN RECORDING
Arthur gathered the family in Manuel’s study.
Mateo sat near the window.
The youngest brother, Gabriel, stood near the fireplace.
Veronica remained beside the desk.
Arthur placed a recorder in the center of the room.
Manuel’s voice filled the silence.
My name is Manuel Joaquin Cardenas.
I am recording this statement while fully aware of my decisions.
Veronica stared at the device.
Manuel continued.
I recently discovered that Teresa Morales is the daughter of my sister Isabel.
I confirmed the relationship through independent DNA testing.
Arthur presented the laboratory report.
The probability of a biological relationship exceeded 99.9 percent.
Manuel’s voice continued.
The controlling shares were not given to Teresa because she served my household.
They were returned to the line from which my father stole them.
Joaquin’s original partnership agreement had granted Isabel twenty-five percent of the family business.
After disowning her, he reassigned those shares to Manuel.
Over decades, the shares had grown into controlling ownership.
Manuel had spent years profiting from property that should have partly belonged to his sister.
Veronica stood.
“This is absurd.”
Arthur lifted one finger.
“The recording is not finished.”
Manuel continued.
I have watched my children treat inheritance as proof of superiority.
Veronica has repeatedly used company funds for personal projects.
Mateo signed documents without reading them.
Gabriel raised concerns and was ignored.
A forensic audit must begin immediately after my death.
Veronica looked toward Mateo.
He avoided her eyes.
The recording continued.
If Teresa is asked to sign a settlement, confession, release, loan agreement, or transfer, she must read every page.
There are people in this family who believe signatures matter more than truth.
Teresa closed her eyes.
Manuel had not left a vague warning.
He had predicted the exact trap.
Then his voice became weaker.
If my death occurs before I remove Veronica from temporary control, examine the medication in my study.
No one moved.
Arthur stopped the recording.
“What medication?” Teresa asked.
Veronica answered too quickly.
“He was old.”
“He took many pills.”
Arthur looked at her.
