Chapter 18 - THE COMPANY TERESA REFUSED TO OWN ALONE

Teresa served as chairwoman for four years.

She learned to read financial statements.

She asked questions other directors considered too simple.

Those questions often revealed the most complicated lies.

“Who benefits?”

“Who carries the risk?”

“Whose signature is missing?”

“Why is this clause on page forty-three?”

The company restored every dollar taken from employee funds.

It sold Adrian’s private holdings and used the proceeds to support injured workers.

Twenty-five percent of voting shares transferred into an employee trust.

Several relatives opposed the decision.

Teresa remained firm.

“My mother lost her inheritance because one man controlled every decision.”

“I will not preserve the same structure simply because I am the person controlling it now.”

Independent directors gained authority.

Family members had to meet the same qualifications as outside candidates.

No Cardenas heir received automatic employment.

Mateo never returned to the board.

Rafael served only as a consultant after repaying part of his inheritance.

Gabriel eventually became operations director after completing an open selection process.

Teresa stepped down once the reforms were secure.

Arthur asked why she did not remain.

“Because power should survive the person holding it.”

“What will you do?”

May you like

Teresa smiled.

“I want to cook dinner only when I feel like it.”
