Chapter 9 – The Verdict

Six months later, Courtroom Three was standing room only.
The criminal trial of Richard Harrington had dominated headlines for weeks.
Former executives testified against him.
Forensic accountants traced millions of dollars through offshore accounts.
Vanessa Kensington spent two full days on the witness stand.
She admitted her affair.
She admitted accepting expensive gifts.
But she also admitted that Richard had instructed her to destroy emails, falsify invoices, and remain silent.
"I thought he loved me," she testified quietly.
"I was wrong."
Richard never looked at her.
When closing arguments concluded, the jury deliberated for less than five hours.
Everyone returned to the courtroom just before sunset.
The foreperson stood.
"We find the defendant..."
A pause.
"...guilty."
One word after another followed.
Guilty of wire fraud.
Guilty of forgery.
Guilty of money laundering.
Guilty of conspiracy.
Richard closed his eyes.
Years spent building an empire had ended in a matter of seconds.
Judge Whitmore looked directly at him.
"Mr. Harrington, your greatest crime was not simply stealing money."
She paused.
"You believed everyone around you existed to be used."
The courtroom remained silent.
"I hereby sentence you to twelve years in state prison, restitution of all recoverable assets, and permanent disqualification from serving as an officer or director of any publicly traded company."
The gavel struck.
It was over.
Richard was led away in handcuffs without once looking back.
There was no applause.

Justice didn't need celebration.
It only needed truth.
