Chapter 1 – The First Move

Khloe lowered herself into the leather chair across from Harrison's desk, her hands instinctively protecting the child growing beneath her heart. The city lights beyond the office windows shimmered against the glass, but she barely noticed them. Everything she had believed about her marriage had collapsed in a single afternoon.

Harrison remained standing.

He reread the messages one final time before locking the tablet and placing it on the polished walnut desk.

"You are not going back to that house to beg."

Khloe swallowed hard.

"What am I supposed to do?"

His answer came without hesitation.

"You disappear."

She blinked.

"What?"

"For a little while."

He walked toward the wall of windows, folding his arms.

"Richard thinks he has already won. Men like him become careless when they believe the game is over."

"I can't just disappear. My doctor's appointments—"

"I've already called Dr. Monroe."

She looked up in surprise.

"You...what?"

"He'll move your care to a private clinic under another name. Security, restricted access, no visitors without my approval."

Khloe stared at him.

"You planned all this already?"

"I started planning the moment you cried on the phone."

Her eyes filled again.

For years Harrison had respected her marriage, refusing to interfere unless she asked. Tonight that promise was over.

He opened a file drawer and placed several documents before her.

"I hired forensic accountants an hour ago."

She frowned.

"So quickly?"

"I've been waiting for Richard Harrington to make a mistake for six years."

Khloe's eyes widened.

"You never trusted him?"

"I trusted how people react to money."

He slid the first report toward her.

"Richard isn't hiding assets because he wants a divorce."

She looked down.

"He needs cash."

"What do you mean?"

"Harrington Commercial Group is bleeding."

He handed her another folder.

Millions in outstanding loans.

Projects months behind schedule.

Banks quietly refusing additional credit.

Private investors demanding repayment.

Richard's empire looked glamorous from the outside.

Inside, it was collapsing.

"The affair wasn't the beginning," Harrison said quietly.

"It was the escape plan."

Khloe suddenly understood.

"The baby..."

"He never wanted another financial responsibility."

Silence settled between them.

The realization hurt more than discovering the affair itself.

Richard hadn't simply fallen in love with another woman.

He had calculated the cost of his wife...and his unborn daughter.

The following morning, Richard returned home to an empty mansion.

Every closet in the master bedroom stood open.

Khloe's clothing was gone.

The nursery remained unfinished.

Only one envelope rested on the kitchen island.

He smiled.

"So she finally gave up."

He opened it casually.

Instead of a letter...

He found divorce papers.

Signed.

Dated.

And attached beneath them—

A temporary court order freezing every jointly owned marital asset until a full forensic financial investigation could be completed.

His smile disappeared.

For the first time in years...

Richard Harrington realized someone had made the first move before he did.

And somewhere across Philadelphia, Harrison Cole quietly began preparing the second.
