Chapter 5 – Cracks in the Empire

The morning after the hearing, the phones inside Harrington Commercial Group never stopped ringing.

Investors wanted answers.

Banks demanded meetings.

Board members requested emergency financial reports.

Richard stood in his corner office watching the city below, realizing how quickly success could become isolation.

His chief financial officer entered quietly.

"We have another problem."

Richard closed his eyes.

"How much?"

"The Harbor Point investors have withdrawn."

"They can't."

"They already did."

"What about the Riverside development?"

"Paused."

"The Boston project?"

"Canceled."

Each sentence struck like another hammer blow.

Years of carefully built prestige were collapsing in less than a month.

Across town, Harrison met privately with federal investigators.

One agent slid a document across the table.

"We verified the forged signatures."

Another added,

"We also traced company funds used to purchase Ms. Kensington's penthouse."

Harrison nodded.

"I expected as much."

"What we didn't expect..."

The agent leaned forward.

"...was insurance fraud."

Harrison looked up.

"What kind?"

"The Harrington Group reported construction losses on projects that were never actually damaged."

The room fell silent.

This case had grown far beyond a difficult divorce.

It was becoming a criminal investigation.

Meanwhile, Vanessa sat alone inside the luxury penthouse Richard had bought for her.

The apartment suddenly felt enormous.

Cold.

Empty.

She scrolled through social media.

Every headline carried Richard's name.

Every article mentioned fraud.

Comments that once admired their glamorous lifestyle had turned merciless.

Gold digger.

Homewrecker.

Criminal.

Her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

"Hello?"

"This is the District Attorney's Office."

Her heart nearly stopped.

"We'd like to speak with you regarding Mr. Harrington."

After the call ended, Vanessa remained perfectly still.

For nearly two years she had believed Richard would protect her.

Now she wasn't so sure.

Because powerful men often protected themselves first.

And she was beginning to understand that she had never been his partner.

She had always been expendable.

That evening Harrison visited Khloe.

He found her quietly folding tiny baby clothes in the nursery.

"The hearing went well," she said softly.

"It did."

"But it isn't over."

"No."

She smiled gently.

"It never was about winning, Harry."

"What was it about?"

She rested a hand over her daughter.

"Making sure she grows up knowing that the truth is worth fighting for."

Harrison smiled.

For the first time since this nightmare began...

He believed they were going to be all right.
