Chapter 8 – A New Beginning

Two weeks after Richard Harrington's arrest, the first snow of December drifted across Philadelphia.

Khloe stood in the nursery Harrison had helped her prepare, carefully folding tiny pink blankets into the dresser. The room smelled faintly of fresh paint and baby powder. Sunlight spilled through the window, warming the rocking chair in the corner.

For the first time in nearly a year, the house felt peaceful.

Her phone buzzed.

It was the hospital.

"Mrs. Cole—"

Khloe laughed softly.

"I haven't been a Cole for years."

The nurse smiled through the receiver.

"Not yet. But we'd like you to come in. Your contractions have started."

Harrison arrived less than fifteen minutes later.

He barely waited for Khloe to finish grabbing her overnight bag before ushering her into the SUV.

"You've argued cases before the Supreme Court," Khloe teased through another contraction.

"Why do you look more nervous than I do?"

"I know how to handle judges."

He tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

"I've never delivered my sister to a delivery room."

She reached over and squeezed his hand.

"You've already carried me through the hardest part."

Eight hours later, a tiny cry echoed through the maternity ward.

Khloe burst into tears.

"It's a girl," the doctor announced.

The newborn weighed six pounds, eleven ounces, with dark hair and bright, determined lungs.

When the nurse placed the baby into Khloe's arms, the entire world seemed to disappear.

"Hello, sweetheart."

The little girl wrapped impossibly tiny fingers around her mother's thumb.

Khloe smiled through tears.

"I've been waiting for you."

Harrison stood quietly near the window.

He had faced murder trials, billion-dollar lawsuits, and some of the most ruthless corporations in America.

None of those victories compared to this moment.

"What will you name her?" he asked.

Khloe looked at the sleeping infant.

"Grace."

"Why Grace?"

"Because after everything we've survived..."

She kissed her daughter's forehead.

"...that's exactly what God gave us."

Three floors below, television crews waited outside the hospital, hoping to photograph the woman whose divorce case had become national headlines.

They waited all day.

They never saw her.

Because Harrison had quietly arranged a private exit through the hospital's underground garage.

May you like

For once, Khloe's life belonged only to her and her daughter.

And that was exactly how she wanted it.
