Chapter 2 – A Man With No Safe Place

Richard stormed into his downtown office before eight the next morning, still clutching the court order. Every step echoed through the marble lobby as employees instinctively moved out of his way.
His executive assistant rose nervously.
"Good morning, Mr. Harrington—"
"Get legal on the phone. Now."
She hesitated.
"They've...already called."
Richard stopped.
"What?"
"The banks."
His stomach tightened.
"The line of credit for the Harbor Point project has been suspended pending review."
He stared at her.
"Suspended?"
She nodded carefully.
"And Wilmington Capital canceled today's funding meeting."
Richard's jaw clenched.
Within twenty minutes, three more calls arrived.
A private lender postponed negotiations.
Another demanded updated financial disclosures.
A third requested an immediate audit of Harrington Commercial Group.
None of this was coincidence.
Only one person had both the influence and the timing.
"Harrison Cole."
Richard whispered the name like a curse.
Across the city, Harrison sat inside a conference room surrounded by accountants, investigators, and two former federal financial-crimes analysts.
No one spoke casually.
Every document was handled with precision.
One investigator projected a flowchart across the screen.
"Forty-three shell companies."
Another added,
"Most exist only on paper."
Harrison folded his hands.
"How much?"
"Approximately eighty-six million dollars moved over eighteen months."
"Destination?"
"Cayman Islands."
"Recoverable?"
The accountant smiled.
"If we move quickly."
Harrison nodded once.
"Move."
Meanwhile, Vanessa Kensington was enjoying brunch with friends at an upscale restaurant, convinced Richard's divorce would soon leave her wearing the Harrington name.
She laughed as one friend admired the diamond bracelet Richard had recently given her.
"You'll be living in that mansion before Christmas."
Vanessa smiled confidently.
"Much sooner."
Her phone vibrated.
Richard.
She answered with a playful voice.
"Miss me already?"
Instead of flirting, he barked,
"Where are you?"
She frowned.
"Brunch."
"Go home."
"What?"
"Now."
The call ended.
Minutes later she unlocked the penthouse door.
Inside waited two investigators.
A woman introduced herself calmly.
"Ms. Kensington?"
"Yes?"
"We're here regarding financial transfers connected to Harrington Commercial Group."
Vanessa laughed.
"There must be some mistake."
The investigator placed photographs on the dining table.
Luxury vacations.
Jewelry.
Bank transfers.
Property records.
Receipts.
Every gift Richard had ever hidden.
Vanessa's smile slowly vanished.
"You've received approximately four-point-three million dollars over the past twenty-two months."
She swallowed.
"We'll need you to explain every dollar."
For the first time...

Vanessa realized dating a wealthy man could become evidence.
And Harrison Cole had only just begun collecting it.
