Chapter 9 – Richard's Last Message

Daniel arrived at the hospital just after sunrise carrying a secure laptop.
Only four people were in the room.
Evelyn.
Margaret.
Daniel.
And Rebecca Hale.
Richard Cross's longtime attorney.
Rebecca placed the laptop on the table.
"The file is encrypted."
She entered a thirty-two-character password from memory.
The screen flickered.
Then Richard Cross appeared.
He looked older than Evelyn remembered.
Thinner.
His illness had already begun to show.
Yet his eyes remained clear.
If anyone was watching this recording...
He already knew he would be gone.
"My name is Richard Cross."
He smiled gently.
"If you're seeing this, then one of two things has happened."
"My son has become the leader I hoped he would..."
He paused.
"...or Evelyn has been forced to protect this company from him."
The room fell silent.
Richard continued.
"I pray it was the first."
His smile faded.
"But I prepared for the second."
He leaned closer to the camera.
"Evelyn..."
"If you're watching..."
"I owe you an apology."
Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.
"You married into this family because you loved Damian."
"I allowed you to inherit responsibilities that should never have belonged to you."
"But I also knew something my son refused to understand."
He smiled again.
"You see people."
"You listen."
"And people willingly trust someone who listens."
Richard reached for a folder off camera.
"What I'm about to reveal has never appeared in any company record."
"There is another trust."
Daniel exchanged a glance with Rebecca.
Even she hadn't known.
Richard continued.
"It isn't for the family."
"It isn't for the shareholders."
"It belongs to the employees."
The screen displayed legal documents.
"The Cross Legacy Trust."
"Thirty percent of my personal fortune was transferred into it before my death."
Evelyn looked stunned.
Richard continued speaking.
"If Cross Capital ever entered a governance crisis..."
"The trust would activate."
"It will provide salaries, health insurance, and emergency assistance for every employee while the company recovers."
Rebecca whispered softly,
"I never knew..."
Richard smiled into the camera.
"A company isn't made of buildings."
"It isn't made of stock prices."
"It's made of people who spend half their lives helping someone else's dream succeed."
"They deserve to be protected."
The recording continued.
"And now..."
"I have one final request."
Richard's expression softened.
"Evelyn..."
"Don't let my son become your life's greatest wound."
"Let him become your greatest lesson."
"Raise your children to know that kindness isn't weakness."
"And never allow wealth to convince them they're worth more than another human being."
He looked directly into the camera.
"If you can do that..."
"My family still has hope."
The recording ended.
No one spoke for several moments.
Margaret quietly wiped away tears.
Daniel removed his glasses.
Rebecca stared at the blank screen.
"I spent twenty-five years working for Richard."
She smiled sadly.
"And he still managed to surprise me."
Later that afternoon...
Cross Capital announced the creation of the Cross Legacy Trust.
Employees gathered in the lobby to watch the live broadcast.
Daniel addressed the crowd.
"No employee will lose healthcare because of this investigation."
"No family will be abandoned."
The room erupted into applause.
Some employees openly cried.
Others hugged one another.
News spread across every major financial network.
For the first time since the scandal began...
The headlines weren't about corruption.
They were about compassion.
Across town...
Damian watched the announcement alone.
His television remained muted.
He stared at the image of his father's portrait behind the podium.
Then at Evelyn.
She wasn't celebrating.
She wasn't attacking him.
She was protecting the people he had forgotten.
His phone rang.
Victor Lang.
"The U.S. Attorney's Office is ready to negotiate."
Damian answered quietly,
"They're offering a plea agreement."
"If you cooperate."
Damian looked back at the television.
For the first time in years...
May you like
He didn't think about saving his fortune.
He wondered whether there was anything left worth saving inside himself.
