Chapter 16 – The Shadow of the Past

Five years after the collapse of Damian Cross's empire, most people believed the Cross family story had finally ended.

They were wrong.

Because some secrets do not disappear.

They wait.

Evelyn sat in her office reviewing the latest expansion plans for Cross Capital.

The company had grown beyond Chicago.

New branches had opened across the country.

The Cross Foundation had become one of the largest employee-support organizations in America.

Everything was exactly where she had fought to bring it.

Stable.

Honest.

Peaceful.

Then Daniel walked into her office carrying a folder.

The expression on his face immediately changed the atmosphere.

"What happened?"

He placed the folder on her desk.

"We found something during the annual audit."

Evelyn opened it.

Inside were documents she had never seen before.

Old contracts.

Hidden accounts.

A company name she recognized.

Her expression hardened.

"Monroe Holdings."

Daniel nodded.

"Celeste's family company."

She looked up.

"Why are we finding this now?"

"Because someone reopened an investigation into their finances."

Evelyn studied the papers carefully.

"What does it have to do with Cross Capital?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Everything."

That evening, Evelyn received an unexpected visitor.

Celeste Monroe.

Years had changed her.

The designer clothes were gone.

The confidence was replaced by exhaustion.

"I know you don't want to see me."

Evelyn remained silent.

"But I need to tell you something."

"Why?"

"Because Damian wasn't the only person who made mistakes."

Celeste looked down.

"My family knew about the missing money."

The room became quiet.

"They helped hide it."

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"Why tell me now?"

"Because they're planning to blame everything on Damian."

She took a deep breath.

"They're trying to erase their own involvement."

Later that night, Evelyn stood beside her office window.

The past had returned.

Not because she wanted it.

Because truth had a way of finding its way back.

Daniel entered.

"What will you do?"

Evelyn looked at the city lights.

May you like

"The same thing I always do."

"Find the truth."
