Chapter 1 – The First Domino

The bedroom door slammed shut behind Damian.

For a few seconds, silence settled over the penthouse.

Then the music downstairs swallowed everything again.

Evelyn remained motionless on the marble floor until the sound of Damian's footsteps faded into the laughter of his investors.

Only then did she exhale.

The pain in her abdomen still lingered, but the sharp cramping had eased enough for her to sit up against the side of the bed.

Her phone vibrated.

HOSTILE ACQUISITION INITIATED.

Primary Authorization Accepted.

Secondary Board Notification Sent.

She closed her eyes.

Five years.

Five years of pretending not to notice forged signatures.

Five years of quietly buying distressed debt through offshore funds Damian never bothered to investigate.

Five years of allowing him to believe every victory had been his own.

He never realized someone else had been moving the pieces.

Another notification appeared.

Emergency Board Meeting Activated.

Estimated attendance:

14 of 15 directors.

Voting rights secured:

71.8%.

Enough.

More than enough.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Evelyn?"

It was Margaret.

The elderly housekeeper cracked the bedroom door open just enough to peek inside.

The moment she saw Evelyn sitting on the floor, her face turned pale.

"Oh, dear God."

Margaret hurried across the room.

"What has he done?"

"I'm all right."

"No."

Margaret carefully helped her onto the edge of the bed.

"You are not."

She noticed the bruises forming along Evelyn's arm and quietly disappeared into the bathroom.

A moment later she returned with a cold towel.

Neither woman spoke.

They no longer needed words.

Margaret had worked in the Cross household for nearly eighteen years.

She had seen enough.

When she finally spoke, her voice trembled.

"I called Dr. Whitaker."

Evelyn looked up.

"I didn't ask you to."

"I know."

Margaret knelt beside her.

"But your babies deserve someone willing to."

Tears threatened to rise.

Not because of Damian.

Because kindness had become so unfamiliar that it almost hurt.

Another vibration.

This time the message came from a contact saved only as A. Grant.

All lenders notified. Cross Capital credit facilities frozen pending governance review.

Perfect.

Downstairs...

Damian lifted a champagne glass.

"Ladies and gentlemen!"

The ballroom erupted into applause.

He smiled like a king.

"I want to thank every one of you for believing in Cross Capital."

The investors cheered.

Several cameras flashed.

Celeste slipped her arm around Damian's waist.

"You deserve this."

"I know."

He kissed her forehead without a second thought.

He had completely forgotten his wife upstairs.

Across the room, Damian's chief financial officer, Andrew Collins, checked his phone.

His smile disappeared.

He blinked.

Read the email again.

Then a third time.

His hands began to shake.

"Damian..."

No response.

Andrew pushed through the crowd.

"Damian."

"What?"

"You need to see this."

Damian glanced at the screen.

His expression barely changed.

"Some kind of phishing scam."

"I don't think so."

The email carried every encrypted signature used by the international banking consortium.

Cross Capital Executive Authority Suspended.

Temporary Control Assigned to Acting Chairwoman Evelyn Cross.

Damian laughed.

"My wife?"

The investors nearby chuckled with him.

"Nice joke."

Andrew didn't laugh.

"There are attachment files."

"What files?"

"The ownership structure."

Damian grabbed the phone.

His smile faded line by line.

Holding company.

Debt conversion.

Convertible voting shares.

Emergency governance clauses.

His own signature.

His father's signature.

Documents dating back six years.

Impossible.

He whispered the word aloud.

"No..."

Andrew swallowed.

"It appears..."

Damian looked up.

"...you don't own controlling interest anymore."

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Across the ballroom, conversations slowed.

Phones began vibrating one after another.

Executives checked their inboxes.

Investors exchanged uneasy glances.

Within two minutes, nearly everyone in the room had received the same notice.

Cross Capital was under new leadership.

And that leader...

Was upstairs.

Still wearing a torn silk nightgown.

Still carrying Damian's unborn children.

Still waiting.

Back in the bedroom, Evelyn gently rested both hands over her stomach.

May you like

"One domino," she whispered.

"There are many more to fall."
