Chapter 6 – The Hidden Ledger

Sunlight poured through the windows of Evelyn's hospital suite.

For the first time in months, she slept without waking to Damian's footsteps.

The silence felt unfamiliar.

Peaceful.

A gentle knock interrupted the morning.

"Come in."

Daniel Foster entered carrying a slim black briefcase.

"You should be resting," he said.

"I will."

She smiled faintly.

"After we finish this."

Daniel placed the briefcase on the table.

"We recovered the contents of your father-in-law's private vault."

Evelyn looked surprised.

"I thought Damian emptied it after Richard died."

"So did everyone."

He unlocked the case.

Inside were several leather-bound journals.

A silver flash drive.

And one sealed envelope addressed in elegant handwriting.

For Evelyn.

She stared at it for several seconds before breaking the seal.

Richard Cross's handwriting filled the first page.

If you're reading this, then my greatest fear has become reality.

I failed to teach my son that wealth is a responsibility, not a privilege.

But I did not fail in choosing the person I trusted to protect what truly matters.

Evelyn blinked away tears.

Daniel quietly looked out the window, giving her privacy.

She continued reading.

The company can survive losing money.

It cannot survive losing its integrity.

If Damian ever mistakes ownership for entitlement, you must stop him.

At the bottom of the letter was a single sentence.

Forgive him if you can. But never surrender your principles to save him.

Evelyn folded the letter carefully.

"I wish he were still here."

"So do many people," Daniel replied.

Across town, Damian hadn't slept.

His lawyer, Victor Lang, paced the living room.

"The situation is worse than I expected."

Damian rubbed his temples.

"How bad?"

Victor opened a folder.

"The forensic auditors have already entered company headquarters."

"They need a warrant."

"They have one."

"They're looking for accounting irregularities."

Damian scoffed.

"They won't find anything."

Victor remained silent.

The pause was enough.

Damian looked up sharply.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Victor sighed.

"Someone has already been cooperating."

"Who?"

"We don't know."

"But whoever it is..."

"They've been supplying records for years."

Damian's stomach tightened.

Years?

Only a handful of people had access to those files.

Andrew.

The finance department.

Or...

Evelyn.

At Cross Capital, employees gathered in the main conference hall.

Rumors had spread through every department overnight.

Some feared layoffs.

Others worried the company would collapse.

At exactly nine o'clock, Evelyn appeared on the large screen from her hospital room.

She wore a simple blue sweater instead of a business suit.

The employees fell silent.

"I know many of you are frightened."

Her voice was calm.

"So am I."

Several people exchanged surprised glances.

"I'm not here to promise that nothing will change."

She paused.

"Because it will."

"But I can promise this."

"No employee will lose their job because of decisions made by senior leadership."

The room erupted into relieved applause.

"We will rebuild this company together."

She smiled softly.

"And we will do it honestly."

Even through a video screen...

The atmosphere changed.

People stood.

Some applauded.

Others simply smiled.

For the first time in years...

Hope returned to Cross Capital.

Late that afternoon, Daniel received a call.

He answered immediately.

"Daniel Foster."

"This is Special Agent Maria Bennett."

"I'm calling regarding the Cross Capital investigation."

Daniel stepped into his office and closed the door.

"What have you found?"

"A hidden ledger."

His expression changed.

"What kind of ledger?"

"It details payments that never appeared in official accounting records."

"How much?"

There was a brief silence.

"Approximately eighty-two million dollars."

Daniel slowly sat down.

"And where was it?"

Agent Bennett answered quietly.

"In a storage unit."

She paused.

"Registered under a name that doesn't exist."

Daniel looked toward Evelyn's office across the hall.

The investigation had only begun.

And the truth was proving even darker than anyone imagined.
