Chapter 10 – The Day the Twins Arrived

Two weeks later...

The summer rain had finally given way to clear blue skies over Chicago.

For the first time since the investigation began, Evelyn allowed herself a quiet morning.

She sat beside the hospital window, reading a children's book Margaret had bought for the twins.

She smiled at the colorful illustrations.

"I suppose you'll hear this story a thousand times," she whispered, resting a hand on her belly.

The babies responded with two gentle kicks.

Margaret laughed.

"I think they're already impatient."

Before Evelyn could answer, a sharp pain spread across her abdomen.

She froze.

Then another.

Dr. Whitaker, who had just entered for his morning rounds, looked at the monitor.

His expression changed immediately.

"Evelyn..."

She looked up.

"It's time."

Within minutes, the maternity floor became a whirlwind of activity.

Nurses rolled her bed toward the delivery suite.

Dr. Whitaker walked beside her.

"You're doing great."

She managed a nervous smile.

"I've negotiated billion-dollar contracts."

He chuckled.

"This will be much harder."

Another contraction came.

She gripped the bedrail.

Margaret squeezed her hand.

"You are not alone."

Meanwhile, Cross Capital's board meeting came to an abrupt halt.

Daniel Foster's phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen and smiled.

"Mrs. Cross has gone into labor."

Every director stood almost instinctively.

"Then this meeting can wait," Helen Brooks said.

Daniel nodded.

"The company survived two difficult weeks."

"It can survive one afternoon."

At the hospital...

Hours passed.

The delivery room echoed with calm instructions.

"Breathe, Evelyn."

"Almost there."

"You've got this."

She thought about Richard.

About the promises she had made.

About the future waiting just beyond this moment.

One final push...

Then—

A baby's cry filled the room.

Clear.

Strong.

Beautiful.

Tears rolled down Evelyn's cheeks.

"It's a girl," Dr. Whitaker announced.

The room barely had time to celebrate before another cry followed.

A little louder this time.

"And here's your son."

The nurses laughed.

"They couldn't wait to meet each other."

Dr. Whitaker carefully placed both newborns in Evelyn's arms.

"They're healthy."

Margaret covered her mouth as tears streamed down her face.

"They're perfect."

Evelyn looked down at the tiny faces sleeping peacefully against her.

Everything she had endured suddenly felt distant.

"They're finally here."

Later that evening...

Daniel quietly entered the room carrying a bouquet of white lilies.

"I hope I'm not interrupting."

Evelyn smiled.

"They've both just fallen asleep."

Daniel looked at the twins.

"They're beautiful."

He placed a folder on the bedside table.

"No business today."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Then what's this?"

"A birth gift."

Inside was a single document.

The Cross Capital Board of Directors had unanimously approved the creation of the Richard Cross Family Scholarship Foundation, dedicated to supporting employees' children in pursuing higher education.

At the bottom of the page, one sentence stood out.

Dedicated to the next generation.

Evelyn smiled.

"He would have loved this."

"I think so too."

Across the city...

Damian sat alone in his attorney's office.

Victor Lang handed him another document.

"The plea agreement."

Damian looked at it but didn't open it.

Instead, he asked quietly,

"Did Evelyn have the babies?"

Victor nodded.

"This afternoon."

"Are they healthy?"

"According to the news... yes."

Damian closed his eyes.

For a long moment, neither man spoke.

Finally, Damian whispered,

"I'm their father."

Victor answered gently,

"You still are."

The words carried both comfort...

And responsibility.

For the first time since everything had fallen apart, Damian realized that while he might never recover his company, there was still one chance left to become a better man.

Whether he deserved it or not...

Would no longer be his decision.
