Chapter 5 – A New Beginning, an Old Reckoning

The ambulance doors closed with a solid thud.
As the vehicle pulled away from the penthouse, Evelyn rested against the stretcher, one hand over her stomach.
Dr. Whitaker watched the monitor carefully.
"Your blood pressure is stabilizing."
She nodded weakly.
"How are the babies?"
He smiled for the first time that night.
"Both heartbeats are strong."
Only then did she allow herself to breathe.
At Cross Capital, Damian stood in the lobby holding a cardboard box.
His office keys had been disabled.
His company phone had been deactivated.
Even the security badge he had worn for years no longer worked.
Employees pretended not to stare.
Some whispered.
Others simply walked past him.
Hours earlier, they had called him "Mr. Cross."
Now no one spoke at all.
Outside the revolving doors, reporters were already gathering.
Camera flashes lit the sidewalk.
"Mr. Cross!"
"Are you being removed as CEO?"
"Did you misuse company funds?"
"Is it true your wife has taken control of Cross Capital?"
Damian ignored every question.
His driver opened the limousine door.
Before he could get inside, another black sedan stopped beside him.
A tall woman stepped out.
Gray suit.
Silver hair.
Sharp eyes.
Damian recognized her immediately.
Rebecca Hale.
His father's longtime personal attorney.
"What do you want?" he snapped.
She handed him a sealed envelope.
"Your father asked me to deliver this only if you ever lost control of the company."
She turned to leave.
"Wait."
She looked back.
"Did he know this would happen?"
Rebecca answered without emotion.
"He hoped it never would."
Then she walked away.
At Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Evelyn was admitted to the maternity ward.
Margaret stayed beside her while nurses completed their examinations.
Everything felt strangely quiet after the chaos of the evening.
A young nurse smiled warmly.
"You've got two very stubborn babies."
Evelyn laughed softly.
"They get that from me."
The nurse adjusted the monitor.
"They're fighters."
"So is their mother."
Several hours later...
Daniel Foster entered the hospital carrying a slim leather portfolio.
"I brought the documents."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow.
"Already?"
"The board didn't want to wait."
He opened the folder.
"The directors unanimously appointed you Interim Chief Executive Officer."
She stared at the papers.
"I never wanted this position."
"I know."
"Then why me?"
Daniel smiled.
"Because you're the only person in this company who never asked for power."
She looked toward the window.
Chicago was beginning to wake.
The first light of dawn reflected off the skyline.
"I'll accept."
Daniel nodded.
"On one condition."
"What is it?"
"The first priority is protecting the employees."
"The second?"
"The company."
"And the third?"
She placed both hands gently over her belly.
"My family."
Daniel extended his hand.
"You have my word."
She shook it.
Across the city...
Damian sat alone in the penthouse.
The music had stopped.
The caterers had gone home.
Champagne glasses remained scattered across the marble floor.
His phone buzzed.
Celeste.
He answered immediately.
"Where are you?"
Her voice sounded nervous.
"Damian..."
"What?"
"The FBI came to my apartment."
His heart skipped.
"They asked questions."
"What kind of questions?"
"About the condo..."
"The jewelry..."
"The consulting company..."
Damian closed his eyes.
"They know."
"They froze my bank accounts."
She began crying.
"What do we do?"
For the first time in years...
Damian had no solution.
He whispered into the phone,
"I... don't know."
Back at the hospital, Evelyn watched the sunrise.
The twins kicked gently beneath her hands.
She smiled.
"For months," she whispered, "I thought surviving was enough."
She looked out over the city that had witnessed both her suffering and her strength.
"Now..."
Her voice was calm.
"It's time to live."
Far below, the Cross Capital headquarters caught the first rays of morning sunlight.
A new day had begun.
May you like
And with it...
A new chapter in the Cross family's legacy.
