Chapter 3 – The Meeting His Father Planned

Damian's driver ignored every speed limit between the penthouse and Cross Capital headquarters.
The city lights blurred past the tinted windows as Damian stared at the growing list of notifications on his phone.
Credit facilities suspended.
Institutional investors requesting clarification.
Trading partners seeking confirmation of executive authority.
Each message carried the same signature.
Authorized by Acting Chairwoman Evelyn Cross.
"No..." he muttered. "She couldn't."
His assistant, seated across from him, looked up cautiously.
"Sir?"
"She doesn't know enough."
The assistant said nothing.
For the first time in years, no one rushed to reassure him.
Twenty-three floors above the streets of Chicago, the boardroom doors opened.
Damian strode inside without acknowledging anyone.
"I demand an explanation."
No one stood.
No one applauded.
No one even spoke.
The directors simply watched him.
At the end of the polished walnut table, Evelyn appeared on the large screen.
She met his eyes calmly.
"You made it."
His face darkened.
"What game are you playing?"
"No game."
"You forged those documents."
"I didn't."
"You stole my company."
"It was never entirely yours."
The room fell silent.
Daniel Foster slid a leather folder across the table.
"Mr. Cross, before we proceed, the board requests that you review Exhibit One."
Damian opened it impatiently.
Inside lay a handwritten letter.
His father's handwriting.
His heartbeat slowed.
To whichever of my children inherits Cross Capital,
Power reveals character faster than wealth ever will.
If this letter is being opened, it means the emergency succession protocol has been activated.
If Damian is still leading this company, then I pray he has become the man I hoped he would be.
If he has not...
Then Evelyn will know what to do.
Damian stopped reading.
His hands trembled.
"What is this?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"Your father amended the governance structure six years before his death."
"I would have known."
"You were informed."
"No, I wasn't."
One of the senior directors adjusted his glasses.
"You chose not to attend that meeting."
Another added,
"You delegated your voting authority."
Damian searched his memory.
He remembered canceling a legal review because he had flown to Monaco with friends.
His father had been furious.
He never asked why.
He never cared.
On the screen, Evelyn finally spoke.
"Your father wasn't protecting me."
She paused.
"He was protecting the company."
Damian laughed bitterly.
"So this was your plan all along?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"My plan was to build a family."
The words hit harder than she intended.
"For years I believed you could become the man your father believed you could be."
She glanced down briefly, resting a hand over her stomach.
"I waited."
"I defended you."
"I covered your mistakes."
"I even loved you."
The room remained silent.
"But eventually..."
She looked back into the camera.
"...I realized I was protecting someone who would never protect me."
Daniel opened another folder.
"The board will now review evidence."
The screens changed.
Bank transfers.
Luxury purchases.
Private jet expenses.
Payments to shell companies.
Millions of dollars diverted from corporate accounts.
Director after director turned pages.
Questions filled the room.
"Who approved these?"
"Were shareholders informed?"
"Why wasn't this disclosed?"
Damian stood abruptly.
"Those were executive expenses."
"Were they?"
Daniel displayed another document.
A penthouse purchased under Celeste Monroe's name.
Paid for by a consulting company funded directly from Cross Capital.
Another page.
Jewelry.
Vacations.
Luxury vehicles.
More than eleven million dollars.
One elderly director slowly removed his glasses.
"I worked with your father for thirty years."
His voice carried quiet disappointment.
"He built this company dollar by dollar."
He looked directly at Damian.
"And you treated it like your personal wallet."
For the first time...
Damian had no answer.
Daniel checked the clock.
"The board will now vote."
Damian slammed both hands on the table.
"You can't remove me!"
A director calmly replied,
"We're not removing you."
He frowned.
"What?"
"We're deciding whether legal action should begin."
The room became so quiet that even the air-conditioning seemed loud.

Hands began to rise.
