Chapter 8 – The Secret Rebecca Saved for the End

Rebecca stood frozen in the middle of her apartment.

The police sirens below grew louder.

Red and blue lights reflected against the glass windows, painting the room in flashes of warning.

She should have been afraid.

She should have been running.

But instead...

she smiled.

Because Rebecca had always believed one thing:

People only won when they knew the whole truth.

And Daniel Morgan still didn't.

Her phone vibrated again.

Another message from K.

Use the file.

Now.

Rebecca looked toward the hidden safe behind the painting on the wall.

For years, she had protected that file.

Not because it could save her.

But because it could destroy everyone else.

She entered the code.

Inside was a thin black folder.

No name.

No label.

Only one word written across the cover.

MATEO.

At Daniel's house, nobody moved.

The video call remained open.

Isabella was crying.

Sofia was crying.

Even Mateo, who had spent years pretending he was strong, couldn't hold back anymore.

"Mom..."

His voice broke.

"I thought you left us."

Isabella pressed her hand against the screen.

"I never left you."

"I was trying to protect you."

Mateo looked away.

"But you weren't there."

Those words hurt more than anything.

Because they were true.

Isabella closed her eyes.

"I know."

"I will spend the rest of my life making up for every day I missed."

Daniel watched silently.

His heart was filled with conflicting emotions.

Joy.

Anger.

Pain.

The woman he loved was alive.

But she had allowed him to bury her.

To grieve alone.

To raise their children believing she was gone forever.

"Why didn't you trust me?" Daniel finally asked.

Isabella looked at him.

"Because Rebecca convinced me she would hurt the children if I exposed her."

Daniel clenched his fists.

"She lied about everything."

"I know."

"But I didn't know who I could trust anymore."

The room became quiet.

Until Laura's phone rang.

She answered.

Then her expression changed.

"We have a problem."

Everyone looked at her.

"Rebecca released documents online."

Daniel frowned.

"What documents?"

Laura turned the laptop around.

Thousands of people were already viewing a leaked file.

The headline read:

BILLIONAIRE DANIEL MORGAN HID THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS SON.

Daniel's face went pale.

"What is that?"

Laura opened the file.

Inside was a birth certificate.

A different one.

The name on it shocked everyone.

Mateo Morgan.

The biological father section...

was not Daniel's name.

Mateo stared at the screen.

"No..."

Sofia grabbed his hand.

"You're my brother."

Mateo looked at Daniel.

"Dad?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Because for the first time...

he didn't know.

The next morning, every news channel was talking about the Morgan family.

Rumors spread faster than facts.

People accused Daniel of hiding an adoption.

Of lying to his own children.

Of building his empire on secrets.

Rebecca watched the chaos from a police vehicle as officers transported her away.

She looked completely calm.

Because this was exactly what she wanted.

Confusion.

Doubt.

Fear.

The same weapons she had used for years.

Inside the house, Daniel sat with Mateo.

The boy looked smaller than he had in years.

"Am I not your son?"

Daniel immediately grabbed his shoulders.

"Listen to me."

"Nothing changes how I feel about you."

"But I need the truth."

Mateo looked down.

"What if the truth changes everything?"

Daniel shook his head.

"The truth doesn't destroy families."

"Lies do."

That afternoon, Isabella arrived at the house under police protection.

The moment she saw Mateo, she stopped.

Because she recognized something.

The same birthmark.

The same eyes.

The same expression she had seen years before.

She whispered:

"No..."

Daniel turned.

"What?"

Isabella looked terrified.

"Rebecca didn't just fake documents."

"She changed something else."

"What?"

Isabella looked at Mateo.

"Before the accident..."

"Rebecca stole our hospital records."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Why?"

Isabella's voice became barely audible.

"Because Mateo's birth was the one thing she could use against us."

She looked at Daniel.

"Mateo is your son."

Everyone exhaled.

But Isabella continued.

"However..."

Her eyes filled with fear.

"Rebecca wasn't trying to prove Mateo wasn't yours."

"She was hiding who she really was."

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Isabella slowly opened an old envelope she had carried for years.

Inside was a photograph.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

And standing beside the baby...

was Rebecca.

Holding him.

The date on the photo was impossible.

Because it was taken...

three days before Rebecca supposedly met the Morgan family.

Daniel stared at the image.

A cold feeling moved through him.

Rebecca hadn't entered their lives by accident.

She had been planning it from the beginning.

And now they finally understood.

The biggest secret wasn't about Mateo.

May you like

It was about Rebecca.

She had been part of the family long before anyone knew her name.
