Chapter 12 – The Woman Behind the First Lie

The courtroom remained silent after the recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The name echoed in everyone's mind.

Claire.

Rebecca's mother.

The woman everyone believed had disappeared decades ago.

The prosecutor slowly turned toward Daniel.

"Did you know Claire Morgan was alive?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Rebecca sat frozen at the defendant's table.

For the first time since her arrest...

she looked completely lost.

Because there was one person she never expected to hear mentioned.

Her mother.

After the hearing was postponed, Detective Laura Bennett gathered everyone in a private room.

"We need to find Claire before anyone else does."

Daniel looked at Rebecca through the glass window.

"She knows something."

Laura nodded.

"Probably everything."

Isabella quietly asked:

"Why would Richard leave a message about her?"

Michael Turner answered.

"Because Richard knew Claire was the beginning of all of this."

Thirty years earlier...

Claire Morgan had been a young woman who fell in love with Richard Morgan.

She believed his promises.

She believed she would become part of the powerful Morgan family.

But when Rebecca was born, Richard changed.

He offered money.

Silence.

A way to disappear.

Claire refused.

She threatened to reveal everything.

And then...

she vanished.

Everyone assumed Richard had solved the problem.

But he hadn't.

That night, Daniel received an anonymous package.

No sender.

No address.

Inside was an old cassette tape.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed Claire.

Older.

Alive.

Standing outside a small house in a remote town.

On the back of the picture was one sentence:

She has been watching you all along.

Daniel immediately called Laura.

Within an hour, they had a location.

A small farmhouse three hours outside the city.

Rebecca sat alone in her prison cell.

She stared at the wall.

Her entire life suddenly felt different.

All the anger.

All the hatred.

All the years she spent believing the Morgans stole her future.

But now she wondered...

What if someone else had been controlling her?

A guard approached.

"You have a visitor."

Rebecca frowned.

"I don't want one."

The guard hesitated.

"You'll want to see this person."

The door opened.

Rebecca's face changed.

"Mom?"

Claire Morgan walked into the room.

She was older than Rebecca remembered.

Her hair was completely gray.

Her eyes were tired.

But she was alive.

Rebecca stood slowly.

"You were alive."

Claire said nothing.

"You let me believe you abandoned me."

A tear rolled down Claire's face.

"I had no choice."

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

"No choice?"

"You disappeared."

"I grew up alone."

"I spent my entire life hating them."

Claire looked at her daughter.

"I know."

"And I am sorry."

Rebecca's anger returned.

"Sorry doesn't change anything."

"No."

Claire whispered.

"But the truth might."

At the farmhouse, Daniel and Isabella found something unexpected.

Not evidence.

Not documents.

A room.

A room filled with pictures.

Hundreds of them.

Photos of the Morgan family.

Daniel.

Isabella.

Mateo.

Sofia.

Even Rebecca.

Michael looked disturbed.

"She has been watching you for years."

Laura picked up a notebook from the table.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Dates.

Events.

Conversations.

Everything.

Then Daniel found a page that made him freeze.

A note written years earlier.

Daniel will become exactly like Richard unless someone breaks the cycle.

Below it was another sentence.

Rebecca is not the enemy. She is the weapon.

Back at the prison, Claire finally told Rebecca the truth.

"Your father didn't abandon us because he hated you."

Rebecca looked confused.

"Then why?"

"Because he was afraid."

"Of what?"

Claire looked into her daughter's eyes.

"Of what you would become after learning the truth."

Rebecca stepped back.

"What truth?"

Claire whispered:

"Richard wasn't your only parent."

Silence.

Rebecca frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Claire opened an old envelope.

Inside was a birth record.

A second name.

A name Rebecca had never seen before.

Claire said quietly:

"Richard Morgan wasn't your biological father."

Rebecca stared.

Her entire identity collapsed.

"Then who was?"

Claire looked toward the prison window.

Toward the city where the Morgan family lived.

And said:

"The man who has been helping Daniel uncover the truth."

Rebecca's eyes widened.

"No..."

Claire nodded.

"Michael Turner."

At that exact moment, Daniel was still studying the evidence room.

Michael stood beside him.

Calm.

Helpful.

Loyal.

Then Daniel noticed something.

A small detail.

Something impossible.

The handwriting on the old documents...

matched Michael's handwriting.

Daniel slowly looked up.

"Michael..."

The investigator turned.

"Yes?"

Daniel held up the paper.

"How long have you known?"

Michael said nothing.

And that silence...

was the answer.

May you like

The man who had helped them find the truth...

might have been the person hiding it from them all along.
