Chapter 6 – The Boy Who Refused To Hide

The doorknob turned slowly.

Mateo stopped breathing.

Every instinct screamed at him to run.

To hide deeper.

To stay silent.

But Sofia was beside him.

And Sofia was shaking.

Her tiny hands covered her mouth as tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

Mateo looked at his sister.

He remembered the day Rebecca had chased them with the kitchen spoon.

He remembered Sofia hiding behind him.

He remembered promising her one thing.

No one would hurt her while he was there.

The closet door moved another inch.

Mateo gently pushed Sofia behind a stack of clothes.

"Stay here."

Her eyes widened.

"No."

"Mateo..."

"You have to trust me."

"I'm scared."

He forced a small smile.

"So am I."

The words surprised her.

Because Mateo had always pretended he wasn't afraid.

"But being scared doesn't mean we stop fighting."

The closet door suddenly opened.

A man stepped inside.

His face was covered.

His eyes moved through the darkness.

"Where are they?"

No answer.

The man took another step forward.

Then—

A lamp crashed against his shoulder.

He stumbled back.

Mateo jumped out.

"Run!"

The intruder grabbed him instantly.

Mateo fought desperately, kicking and pushing.

But the man was much stronger.

"Where is your sister?"

Mateo looked at him with anger.

"You'll never find her."

The man tightened his grip.

"You think your father can save you?"

Mateo's eyes narrowed.

"No."

The man smiled.

"Good answer."

Then Mateo did something unexpected.

He screamed.

Not a scared scream.

A warning.

"DAD!"

Downstairs, Daniel heard his son's voice.

His blood turned cold.

He ran.

The intruder dragged Mateo toward the hallway.

But he never reached the stairs.

Daniel appeared at the end of the corridor.

The look in his eyes made the attacker freeze.

"Let him go."

The man laughed.

"Or what?"

Daniel didn't answer.

He moved forward.

Slowly.

Calmly.

The kind of calm that terrified people.

"You came into my house."

"You threatened my children."

"You destroyed my family."

He raised the weapon.

"And you thought I would let you walk away?"

The intruder pulled Mateo closer.

A mistake.

Because Mateo reacted.

He slammed his elbow backward into the man's ribs.

The grip loosened.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Daniel pulled Mateo away.

The attacker reached for him again—

Then a loud crash came from behind.

Michael Turner appeared with a wooden chair in his hands.

The man collapsed.

Moments later, police flooded the house.

Detective Laura Bennett rushed inside.

"Are the children safe?"

Daniel nodded.

Mateo and Sofia were wrapped in blankets beside him.

But Laura's expression was serious.

"We caught one."

"One?"

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

"What about the others?"

Laura hesitated.

"They escaped."

Michael walked over holding a small device.

"Not exactly."

Everyone turned.

"What is that?" Daniel asked.

"A communication tracker."

Michael looked at the screen.

"The attackers weren't random."

"They were receiving instructions."

Laura stepped closer.

"From who?"

Michael's face became darker.

"I don't know."

"But I know where the signal came from."

He turned the screen around.

A location appeared.

Everyone stared.

Because it wasn't far away.

It was a place Daniel knew very well.

A place that made his stomach drop.

The Morgan Family Foundation Office.

At the same time...

Rebecca sat inside a luxury apartment downtown.

She watched the news coverage on television.

"Attempted Home Invasion at Billionaire Daniel Morgan's Residence."

Her expression remained calm.

But when she saw Mateo's face appear on the screen...

something changed.

The boy had survived.

Again.

Her phone rang.

She answered immediately.

"What happened?"

A man's voice replied.

"The children are alive."

Rebecca closed her eyes.

For the first time...

she looked genuinely angry.

"You had one job."

The man hesitated.

"There's a problem."

"What problem?"

"The boy."

"What about him?"

"He knows more than we expected."

Rebecca slowly stood.

Looking out over the city lights.

"Then we stop treating him like a child."

A cold smile appeared.

"Find out exactly what Mateo saw."

"And if he remembers..."

She paused.

"...make sure he forgets."

The call ended.

But Rebecca didn't notice one thing.

Her apartment door was slightly open.

Someone had entered.

May you like

And standing in the darkness outside...

was a person she thought had disappeared forever.
