Chapter 3 – The Man in the Shadows

Mateo's breath caught in his throat.

The branch snapped again.

Slowly, he turned toward the line of trees that bordered the backyard. The late evening sun cast long shadows across the grass, making it impossible to distinguish shapes from darkness.

"Who's there?" he called, his voice trembling.

No answer.

He clutched the photograph and the note tightly in one hand while instinctively stepping backward toward the house.

Another rustle.

This time, he saw movement.

A tall man dressed in a dark jacket emerged from behind an oak tree. His face was hidden beneath a baseball cap, but his posture wasn't threatening.

He slowly raised both hands.

"I'm not here to hurt you."

Mateo didn't stop backing away.

"Stay away from us!"

The man sighed.

"You have your mother's eyes."

Those words froze Mateo where he stood.

Before he could respond, Daniel burst through the back door.

"Mateo!"

Seeing the stranger, Daniel immediately placed himself between the man and his son.

"Who are you?"

The stranger glanced toward the woods before answering.

"My name doesn't matter."

"It will if you want to leave here alive," Daniel replied coldly.

The man nodded slightly.

"I worked with Isabella."

Daniel frowned.

"My wife was an elementary school teacher."

"That wasn't the only thing she was."

Silence settled over the yard.

The stranger reached slowly into his jacket.

Daniel stiffened.

Instead of a weapon, the man produced an old leather wallet.

Inside was a faded identification card.

Michael Turner.
Licensed Private Investigator.

Daniel examined it carefully.

"You expect me to believe this?"

"No."

"I expect you to listen."

Michael looked directly at Daniel.

"Your wife's death wasn't an accident."

Daniel felt his heartbeat pounding in his ears.

"I've heard enough lies."

"This isn't one."

Michael pointed toward the photograph in Mateo's hand.

"She kept evidence."

"Evidence against whom?" Daniel demanded.

Michael hesitated.

Then he answered with a single name.

"Rebecca."

Inside the house, Detective Laura Bennett arrived just as Daniel escorted Michael into the living room.

She immediately requested his identification and questioned him for nearly twenty minutes.

Finally, Michael placed a small flash drive on the coffee table.

"I've been trying to reach Daniel for over a year."

"Every time I got close..."

"...someone intercepted me."

Laura exchanged a glance with Daniel.

"What's on the drive?"

"Financial records."

"Insurance claims."

"Phone logs."

"And surveillance photos."

Daniel picked up the drive.

"Surveillance of whom?"

"Rebecca."

Laura immediately plugged it into her encrypted laptop.

Hundreds of files appeared.

Dates stretching back nearly three years.

Photographs.

Bank statements.

Recorded meetings.

One folder caught Laura's attention.

BLACK RIDGE ROAD

She opened it.

A grainy traffic camera image filled the screen.

It showed Isabella's car driving along a deserted mountain road.

Seconds later...

Another vehicle appeared behind her.

A black SUV.

Laura enlarged the image.

The license plate was partially visible.

Daniel stared silently.

He recognized it.

Rebecca had driven that SUV for years.

Across town, Rebecca sat inside an expensive hotel suite.

Her phone rang.

"What?" she answered impatiently.

The voice on the other end sounded nervous.

"The investigator reached Daniel."

Rebecca stood abruptly.

"How?"

"I don't know."

She slammed her fist against the table.

"You promised me he was gone!"

"He disappeared before we found him."

Rebecca's breathing became heavier.

Then she walked to the window overlooking the city lights.

"So..."

"They finally know about Black Ridge Road."

She smiled.

Not because she wasn't afraid.

But because she had prepared for this possibility years ago.

She whispered to herself,

"If they open that door..."

"...they'll find far more than they're ready to face."

She picked up another phone.

The one no one knew existed.

She dialed a number saved under only one letter:

K.

The call connected after a single ring.

Rebecca spoke calmly.

"It's time."

A deep male voice replied,

"I was wondering when you'd finally ask."

The line went dead.

Miles away, in an abandoned warehouse, a man closed an old flip phone.

Then he unlocked a steel cabinet.

Inside...

were dozens of boxes labeled with one name.

ISABELLA MORGAN.

And at the very bottom...

DO NOT OPEN UNTIL DANIEL LEARNS THE TRUTH.
