Chapter 9 - The Patent

Richard did not deny it.
Claire called him from Benjamin’s office.
“Did Vale Industries steal Whitmore technology?”
Long silence.
Then.
“Yes.”
Adrian, who had demanded to join the call, stared at his father.
“What?”
Richard looked decades older.
“Twenty-three years ago, Vale Industries licensed encryption architecture from Whitmore Technology.”
“The agreement was temporary.”
“Our engineers incorporated parts into a permanent platform.”
“Eleanor sued privately.”
Claire’s hands tightened.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“I settled.”
“With whom?”
“Your grandfather.”
Claire frowned.
“My grandfather died twenty-five years ago.”
Richard stopped.
Then Claire understood.
“Not my grandfather.”
“Helen.”
Richard nodded.
Helen accepted cash and a small stake in Vale Industries.
Eleanor never knew.
When she discovered it years later, the sisters stopped speaking.
Claire finally understood their estrangement.
Eleanor believed Helen betrayed the company.
Helen believed Vale cheated the family first.
Adrian looked furious.
“So Ethan’s takeover is revenge?”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
“It is leverage.”
Helen’s old stake had been diluted.
But she retained historical rights tied to patent settlements.
If Vale Industries defaulted on certain debts, her fund could trigger claims.
Ethan had built his attack around those rights.
Claire asked.
“Why now?”
Richard looked at her.
“Because your mother’s trust transferred.”
“Helen believed the Whitmore assets should never have gone entirely to you.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“So everyone waited for my birthday.”
Adrian stared at her.
“You knew nothing about this?”
Claire looked at him.
“No.”
“Just like you knew nothing about Savannah.”
That ended his question.
Then Richard revealed another fact.
Eleanor had purchased Vale shares secretly before her death.
Not twenty-nine percent.
Thirty-four.
Five percent had never transferred to Claire.
Because those shares were held in escrow pending a legal condition.
“What condition?”
Richard looked toward Adrian.
“If a Vale executive was found to have engaged in marital financial coercion against Eleanor’s daughter, the shares released directly to Claire.”
Adrian’s face went blank.
Claire stared.
“My mother wrote that?”
“Yes.”
Richard almost smiled.
“She disliked you before she died.”
Adrian looked offended.
Claire laughed for the first time in days.
“What counts as financial coercion?”
Benjamin answered from the contract.
Restricting access to independent funds.
Using financial dependency to control marital decisions.
Threatening loss of housing or support.
Adrian’s own messages contained all three.
If validated, Claire would not hold twenty-nine percent.
She would hold thirty-four.
Enough with Richard to control nearly two-thirds of Vale Industries.
Adrian whispered.
“Your mother planned for this.”
Claire answered.
“No.”
May you like
“She planned for me to have an exit if I ever needed one.”
That was different.
