Chapter 19 - Claire’s Thirty-Third Birthday

Claire spent her thirty-third birthday at home in Washington.
A real home this time.
Brick townhouse.
Small garden.
No ocean view.
No underground garage.
No room nobody used.
No staff.
No eighteen-million-dollar statement about success.
Noah decorated the kitchen with paper stars.
Benjamin brought cake.
Maya brought champagne.
Richard flew in.
Even Adrian came for one hour because Noah insisted birthdays required “all important people.”
Claire allowed it.
Margaret did not come.
Their relationship remained nonexistent.
Claire was comfortable with that.
During cake, Noah asked.
“Mommy, are you rich?”
Everyone laughed.
Claire looked at him.
“Why?”
“Someone at school said you bought Daddy’s company.”
Adrian nearly choked.
Claire smiled.
“I did not buy Daddy’s company.”
“You bought our old house.”
“Yes.”
“Twice?”
Everyone laughed harder.
Claire nodded.
“Sort of.”
Noah looked impressed.
“Why?”
Claire thought.
“Because sometimes adults need to move money around for legal reasons.”
Benjamin muttered.
“Excellent bedtime material.”
Noah ignored him.
“Are you rich?”
Claire answered.
“Yes.”
It was the first time she had ever said it without discomfort.
No hiding.
No pretending.
No shame.
Then Noah asked.
“Does that make you boss?”
Claire shook her head.
“No.”
“What makes you boss?”
“Usually a vote.”
Richard laughed.
Noah looked disappointed.
Claire pulled him closer.
“Money gives choices.”
“It doesn’t make you better.”
He nodded.
Then asked Adrian.
“Are you rich?”
Adrian smiled.
“Less than before.”
Noah seemed satisfied.
The moment passed.
Later, after everyone left, Claire stood alone in the kitchen.
At thirty-one, she had believed survival meant enduring.
At thirty-two, she learned survival could mean leaving.

At thirty-three, she no longer wanted her life defined by either.
She wanted to build.
